Major and research focus:
Kao is a CWRU Junior and majoring in Biology with a minor in Nutrition and Chemistry. Her Summer 2024 research was entitled: "Characterizing Strain Diversity of L. Crispatus in the Vaginal Microbiome of Cleveland Women."
Research mentors and funding source:
Kao's research mentor was Gina Lewin, PhD, CWRU School of Medicine, Department of Pathology
Kao was funded by the SOURCE P-SURG program.
Biggest learning moment while doing research:
Kao’s research experience has proven to be beneficial. She said one her greatest things she learned is that “when things do not go the right way, I need to be flexible and resourceful.” She went to say, “I have learned there are lot of ways to investigate questions for which I am seeking answers; while at the same time maintaining research integrity.”
Service and Leadership at CWRU:
Kao works hard to build her leadership aptitude outside of the classroom. Currently she is the Vice President of the Taiwanese Student Association. In addition, she participates in Art Forward, which is a college student volunteer group that visits local juvenile detention centers.
Aspirations for the future:
Kao plans to go on to pursue doctoral studies with the intent of becoming a Professor, possibly in her current field of study.
