Students whose first language is not English develop their English and academic skills throughout their undergraduate careers. We offer courses specifically designed for students for whom English is not their first language that focus on targeted instruction in reading, speaking, listening, and academic writing.
If you believe that any of your students whose native language is not English may need additional structured coaching to succeed in your course, the ESL Writing Program can support you and your students in a number of ways:
- Assistance in developing strategies that help students with their language and academic skills development (e.g., assign readings early, provide guiding questions for discussions)
- Assistance in identifying appropriate external support beyond your classroom, such as the Writing Resource Center or Spoken English Language Programs
- Support courses (such as ENGL 146: English Grammar for Writers, ENGL 180: Writing Tutorial, ENGL 183: Academic Writing Studio)
