This final concert of the season features music written about stories originating from Japanese, Chinese and Korean cultures. Several pieces are well- known and recognizable from films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, and Kubo and the Two Strings. We are honored to have Soon Hee Newbold's permission to perform Hangul, as she wrote this piece specifically for Gustav Dudamel's farewell concert with the L.A. Philharmonic, and we are giving only the second public performance of this piece.
Contemporary Youth Orchestra is committed to the study and performance of exclusively contemporary and new orchestral music, with a focus on introducing students to careers in the creative arts industries. CYO defines contemporary repertoire as music written in the last 100 years, and we have a distinct interest in performing new music. CYO frequently commissions new works and seeks out adventurous programming opportunities.
