Choral Arts Cleveland performs Sunday, May 5, 2019 3:00 p.m.
In 1975, the joy of singing and friendship brought together a small group of men and women which has grown to become the Choral Arts Society of Cleveland (also known as Choral Arts Cleveland), a nonprofit community chorus of sixty to seventy dedicated and proficient singers. Members come from all walks of life, diverse cultural backgrounds, ages spanning six decades, and include talented voices with varying degrees of musical training. A central component of the mission of the chorus is to increase access to choral music by offering free concerts.
Choral Arts Cleveland is committed to promoting excellence in community music making, performing choral masterworks of both classical and living composers. Performances have included Haydn’s The Seasons, Brahms’ Requiem, Bloch’s The Sacred Service, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. During the past seven seasons with the support of grants from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, Choral Arts presented major works by contemporary British composers, with northeast Ohio premieres of Anthony Pitts’ Jerusalem - Yerushalayim, Robert Cohen’s Alzheimer’s Stories performed at Severance Hall, and James Whitbourn’s oratorio Annelies, based on excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank, performed at Fairmount Temple. For a complete listing of past performances, visit www.choralartscleveland.org.
As part of its goal of contributing meaningfully to the artistic life of Greater Cleveland, Choral Arts collaborates with other local arts organizations for creative programming. This collaboration has included groups such as Suburban Symphony Orchestra, Western Reserve Chorale, Verb Ballets, Classical Revolution Cleveland, and the drum ensemble Samba Joia, as well as students from University School and Laurel School.
For its 2018-2019 season, Choral Arts welcomes new director Brian Bailey, who will assume the position vacated by retired music director, Martin Kessler. He will continue the heritage of visionary and skilled leadership that has nurtured, enriched, and challenged the chorus.
