It was founded in 1935 to provide women musicians with performance opportunities since they generally were not accepted into symphony orchestras in at time. Since it's debut concert at Severance Hall in 1936, the Women's Orchestra continues to serve women musicians and offer the broader community accessible and affordable arts programming.

The Cleveland Women's Orchestra is an historic orchestra; the last of the numerous women's orchestras that existed in the early part of the 20th Century. The Orchestra was founded in 1935 to give women musicians performance opportunities because women were generally not accepted into symphonies at that time. It's mission also includes presenting accessible and affordable to the broader community with an annual series of free programs for those without access.
