Event Details/Summary

The story of Toussaint Louverture is a particularly powerful one for the African diaspora, but for humanity and global struggles for liberation. Napoleon Maddox chose to draw inspiration from the life of Toussaint Louverture for his new creative musical project. His life had an incredible trajectory. Born in slavery, he gained his freedom, fought in the French military and so respected for military prowess that he rose to rank of general. Then he fought again the French to abolish slavery and wrote Haiti’s constitution, for which he was imprisoned in Chateau du Joux, where he died.

Continuing the approach taken in his previous shows, Napoleon Maddox features characters histories in a contemporary context, inspiring the public to see the relevance of life of these characters in the present. As the title of this creation indicates, it is about opening the doors of history, and gates of the Château de Joux to explore and share the life of Toussaint Louverture.

Maddox and his fellow artists wrote songs that share how they are personally affected by this story. The musical aesthetic of the project glides effortlessly between the worlds of jazz, electro and hip-hop.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the event
