Drug Discovery, Stem and Progenitor Cells

This is the Study Group that everyone joins at grant writing time when we consider the importance of our work. While we cultivate membership in our Therapeutic Interventions Study Group, we are presenting articles of interest in this theme here. iPS Cells for PD and retinal regeneration

Grafting cells into the human brain for the treatment of Parkinson's disease sounds like an old idea. The research group led by Jun Takahashi MD PhD, a stem cell researcher at Kyoto University, is making it new again. The first patient in the University's clinical trial has been successfully grafted, and thus far, all is well.

The way forward for this work was partly paved by truly related work - that of Jun's wife, Masayo Takahashi MD PhD Project Leader in Retinal Regeneration at the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology, who is using iPS cells to combat blindness
