Position Objective

The Flora Stone Mather Center for Women (FSMCW) engages and supports all faculty, staff, postdocs, and students engaged in research, teaching, and/or community service that revolves around the experiences of all women.  The Faculty Director will provide visionary leadership grounded in scholarly frameworks  building on the rich history and strong campus-wide involvement of the FSMCW, the Faculty Director will create and implement a comprehensive vision that encompasses a diverse range of scholarly research, educational programming, and leadership and professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and postdoctoral scholars at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).

Working with a high degree of autonomy, the center Faculty Director reports to the Deputy Provost and provides overall leadership and administration of the FSMCW, including staff and student supervision, resource management, center leadership, creation and oversight of programs , and consulting in matters and policies pertaining to gender , all with a dedicated emphasis on research and scholarship. The Faculty Director also partners with the schools/College, senior university leadership, campus units, alumni, donors, and the FSMCW Community Advisory Board. This leader also strategically conducts community outreach that engages in ongoing development efforts to secure individual, grant, and endowment funding.

This role is an administrative position at 50% effort. Compensation will be in the form of a supplemental administrative stipend and summer salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Advancing Research and Scholarship (45%)
    Develop and promote a clear vision and strategic leadership for  research, evaluation, and scholarship at the FSMCW for the benefit of the entire CWRU community. Create and disseminate research briefs. Support the allocation of SOURCE grants. Aid researchers studying gender disparities through training, development, and funding opportunities. Continue to develop the Journal for Women and Gender Centers in Higher Education, the FSMCW's publication for professionals working in women and gender centers. Formulate a comprehensive assessment and evaluation plan regarding the status of women and gender at CWRU to guide education, programming and policy making.
  2. Education and Programming (15%)
    Collaborate with the Director of Education and Programming to create a vision and set strategic priorities for both new and existing programs focused on gender , violence prevention, mentoring, and leadership development for faculty, staff, students, and postdocs. Advance advocacy initiatives in fields such as STEM and general leadership. Develop and implement training programs that foster allyship.
  3. Center Leadership & Staff Supervision (20%) 
    Collaborate with key stakeholders within and beyond the FSMCW to develop a strategic plan and identify key scholarly and programming activities. Ensure strategic priorities align with and advance the mission and vision of the Office of the Provost and overall University. Through a combination of direct and indirect responsibilities, provide supervision for all staff of the FSMCW, prioritizing teambuilding, professional development, and leadership development to recruit and retain an exceptional team. Develop a supportive and collaborative professional environment that facilitates teamwork and innovation.
  4. Strategic Collaboration (15%)
    Lead collaborative efforts aligned with the Center’s mission through relationship development and strategic engagement of partners both on and off campus. Collaborate with senior university leadership to improve the climate for faculty, staff, postdocs and students at CWRU. Key on campus partnerships include the Office of the Provost, Office of Faculty Advancement and Postdoctoral Affairs, the Division of Student Affairs, Office of Campus Enrichment & Engagement, Human Resources, Staff Council, the Office of Equity, and members of the University development team, among others. Strengthen and expand engagement of partners beyond campus, including the FSMCW Community Advisory Board, Mather Alumni Network, corporate and non-profit partners, the National Women’s Studies Association and other organizations. Engage in fund development and public relations through strategic networks across the CWRU alumni community, professional advocates, and national leaders.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support mission-critical activities (2.5%). 
  • Perform other duties assigned (2.5%).

Contacts

Department: Continuous contact with the Office of the Provost to collaborate on initiatives as defined above.

University: Occasional contact with senior university leadership, including the Provost and the Office of the President. Regular contact with campus partners for strategic collaboration and guidance as defined above.

External: Frequent contact with members of the FSMCW Community Advisory Board and community partners. Regular contact with CWRU alumni and supporters in the community for the center’s mission and fundraising. Occasional contact with local corporate partners for outreach and programming efforts.

Students: Occasional contact with undergraduate, graduate and professional students in participating in center programs and initiatives. Frequent contact with students providing support.  

Supervisory Responsibility

Direct supervision of the Director of Education and Programming, the Associate Director for Research and Evaluation, the Department Assistant, and postdoctoral scholars.

Qualifications and Required Skills

  1. Faculty appointment at Case Western Reserve University.
  2. Demonstrated research and scholarly background in women’s, gender, and/or sexuality studies. 
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to women, gender and intersectionality, including the intersection of differences among women with regard to race, ethnicity, dis/ability, sexuality, nationality, age, social class, religion, and other categories of identity.
  4. Must be able to make sound, autonomous decisions which align with the purpose of the center and mission and values of the university.
  5. Track record of successful cross-functional collaboration, including an ability to build strong relationships with faculty and administrative colleagues.
  6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
  7. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and management skills and a collaborative management style. 
  8. Demonstrated ability to manage confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment. 
  9. Demonstrated commitment to high professional, ethical standards within a diverse workplace. 
  10. Ability to engage and lead students, faculty, staff and postdocs from a wide range of backgrounds.
  11. Ability to effectively interact with colleagues and supervisors face to face.
  12. Ability to meet consistent attendance.

Working Conditions

The employee may be asked to work flexible hours and occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends. Ability to travel occasionally.
