Research Opportunities

What research opportunities are available to undergraduates at Case Western Reserve University?

At Case Western Reserve University, research isn’t reserved for graduate students. As an undergraduate, you can work alongside faculty members investigating complex questions, developing new technologies and contributing to discoveries that make an impact.

And you can start early. Many CWRU students begin participating in research during their first year, gaining hands-on experience while building relationships with faculty mentors and developing skills that prepare them for graduate school, professional programs and careers.

Whether you’re studying engineering, the humanities, business, the sciences, nursing or the social sciences, you’ll find opportunities to explore the questions that matter to you.

Find Your Research Opportunity

Not sure where to begin? The Undergraduate Research Office helps students across majors and experience levels find opportunities to get involved.

Explore research positions, connect with faculty mentors, learn how to fund your work and get support presenting your findings. Whether you arrive at CWRU knowing exactly what you want to investigate or are just beginning to explore your interests, you’ll have resources to help you take the next step.

Research Across Disciplines

Research at CWRU takes many forms. You might investigate new approaches to treating disease, analyze historical records, study human behavior, develop sustainable technologies, explore questions about ethics and artificial intelligence, or examine the forces shaping businesses and communities.

With access to a leading research university and partnerships with major hospitals, cultural institutions and organizations throughout Cleveland, you can pursue questions within your major—or collaborate across disciplines to approach complex problems from new perspectives.

Share What You Discover

Research is meant to be shared. At Intersections, CWRU’s undergraduate research symposium, students present their work to the campus community and beyond. You may also have opportunities to present at professional conferences, contribute to published research and build on your work through advanced projects and graduate study.

Turn Discoveries Into Solutions

Sometimes research leads to an entirely new question. Sometimes it leads to an invention, a prototype or even a company. At Sears think[box], CWRU’s open-access innovation center and makerspace, you can design, build and test your ideas using tools ranging from 3D printers and laser cutters to electronics and fabrication equipment.

Students interested in entrepreneurship can also access mentorship, programming and resources to develop ideas, explore potential markets and build new ventures. Whether you’re conducting research, creating a prototype or launching a startup, you’ll have opportunities to turn your curiosity into work that makes an impact.
