Research

Artificial intelligence is transforming research in many ways—from generative AI tools that support writing, synthesis and ideation, to predictive AI methods that uncover patterns and forecast outcomes, to emerging agentic AI systems that can assist with more complex, multi-step research tasks.

At Case Western Reserve University, we recognize these technologies have the potential to accelerate discovery, strengthen data analysis, support creative problem-solving, streamline research workflows, and expand access to advanced methods and tools across disciplines. As adoption grows, we’re keeping pace with how AI is reshaping how knowledge is produced, documented and shared while also raising important questions around data privacy, authorship, transparency, oversight and research integrity.

Research Policies and Considerations

CWRU researchers are encouraged to stay informed about evolving policies, institutional guidance, and available resources to ensure the responsible and compliant use of AI.

Those using AI tools are expected to follow all applicable federal laws and regulations, as well as university policies and standards related to research ethics and the responsible conduct of research. Because guidance on AI continues to evolve, researchers should consult the most current requirements from the relevant sponsor, publisher, or funding agency before incorporating AI into their work.

Sponsor and Agency Guidance

Researchers should also review sponsor-specific guidance related to AI use in proposal development, peer review, data privacy, confidentiality, research integrity, and disclosure expectations. Current federal guidance includes:
