Guidance

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become more integrated into teaching, learning, research and daily work at Case Western Reserve University and beyond, it is important to use them with care.

Keep the following considerations in mind to help ensure AI is used responsibly, safely and in alignment with university expectations.

Guidance for Using AI

Data Privacy

Avoid entering confidential information into publicly accessible predictive, generative, or agentic AI tools.

Content Responsibility

Remember that AI-generated content can sometimes be inaccurate, misleading or entirely incorrect. Always review the material carefully, using AI as a tool while relying on human judgment for final decisions.

Publishing & Copyright

While AI can assist in content creation, it does not replace the need for awareness of intellectual property rights and understanding copyright and publishing policies. Resources such as the Authors and Generative AI FAQ developed by the Author’s Alliance can help authors and researchers navigate AI use in creative and scholarly work, including questions around AI-assisted writing and training data.

Phishing Awareness

Stay alert to AI-driven phishing attempts and follow security best practices. Report any suspicious messages to security@case.edu.

Mental Health & Well-Being

AI tools should not be used as a substitute for professional mental health support. CWRU is actively examining the intersection of AI, social media and student well-being through an advisory task force, and the campus is encouraged to seek university-supported resources and professional care when needed. For additional guidance, see CWRU's Risks of Using AI for Mental Health Support resource.

Environmental Sustainability

AI systems can require significant computing power and energy use. CWRU continues to monitor these considerations through its AI governance and strategy committees, recognizing sustainability as an important part of responsible, long-term AI adoption. Users are encouraged to use AI thoughtfully, choosing the right tool for the task and avoiding unnecessary use.
