Who We Are

The Latinx Alumni Association was established in 2017 and strives to support CWRU Latinx alumni through networking and fellowship opportunities.

The network also seeks to support current CWRU Latinx students through mentorship opportunities and other initiatives, in alignment with CWRU’s core value of diversity and inclusion.

Officers and Board of Directors

President: Omar Gutierrez ( CWR '12 )

Omar Gutierrez headshot

Omar Gutierrez is a practicing physician and co-founder of a fintech company based in Columbus, OH. He has a deep commitment to improving immigrant health, promoting entrepreneurship, and enhancing financial literacy. A graduate of Case Western Reserve University in 2012, Omar earned his Bachelor's degree in Medical Anthropology. He then pursued his passion for medicine, completing his MD from Harvard Medical School and his internal medicine training at the Cleveland Clinic. He now serves as President of the CWRU Latinx Alumni Association, leading the organization's efforts to strengthen its alumni network and support its members.


Vice President: Joel Fuentes ( CWR '21, MED '21)

Joel Fuentes is a health policy and health communications professional based in Washington, D.C. Currently, he lends his expertise to the United States Department of Health and Human Services working to strengthen and diversify the Nation's health workforce. As an advocate for digital inclusion and health equity, Joel draws on experiences as a community organizer, former congressional intern, and a person of Mexican-American heritage. Joel is a double alumnus of Case Western Reserve University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with minors in Spanish and Bioethics and a master’s degree in Bioethics and Medical Humanities with a concentration in Medicine, Society, and Culture. He currently serves as the Communications Chair for the CWRU Latinx Alumni Association.
