Susan Case

Associate Professor
Department of Organizational Behavior
Weatherhead School of Management

Susan Case’s newest research examines religious texts’ and traditions’ impact on managerial integrity, moral responsibility and anti-corruption behavior; the brain and gendered discourse in the professional workplace; and the postdoctoral transition zone in the bench sciences and women’s emerging identity. As an authority in the field of gender communication, influence and decision-making, Case identified reasons why differences in men’s and women’s discourse in organizations persist, including the role of biology, and the contributions differences make. This work was honored as a featured women and work article by Wiley Publishers in 2016. Her work with women in organizations focuses on work/family integration, career-in-life issues and organizational policy needed throughout careers for women in nontraditional fields. Her work on traditional wisdom from western religious traditions focuses on how values from religious upbringing influence managerial ethical behavior and leadership integrity. She also studies how different groups of people learn about diversity in a global context and ways to design systems for the organizational inclusion of diverse employees.

Case’s research has been published in interdisciplinary academic journals including the Journal of Applied Psychology: An International Review, Studies in Linguistic Sciences, Business and the Contemporary World, Women's Studies International Forum, Urban Review, Women and Language, American Journal of Economics and Business Administrations, Proceedings of IEEE, and Community, Work and Family, as well as books and anthologies about managerial integrity, ethics education, strategic business initiatives, gender communication, women in organizations, women and men’s career development, and management education. Case is an expert witness in cases involving organizational restructuring; gender, race, disability, and age discrimination; hostile work environments; sexual harassment; and disparate impact. She is a Gestalt International Systems Development Consultant, working with Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, military institutions, hospitals, universities, public and private schools, and arts organizations across the U.S., Europe, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong, and Israel.

Case is an associate professor in the departments of organizational behavior, women and gender studies, and social justice at Case Western Reserve University. Her grants include a Case Western Reserve Ethics Fellow, ACES+ADVANCE Opportunity Grant on Women, NORD Curriculum Grant, and two NSF grants. She was an Inaugural Kaufman Scholar for Religion and Business, Center for Financial Policy, Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland; received the Bronze Award for work in McGraw Hill’s Contemporary Learning Series; and received the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence Award for Excellence in Mentoring, Case Western Reserve.

Case received her PhD in organization, administration, and policy from the State University of New York at Buffalo, was a doctoral Research Scholar in Administrative Sciences at Yale University’s School of Management, has an MEd from the University of Illinois, and earned a BS from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. She teaches courses in ethics, global leadership in diversity and inclusion, leading organizations, and women and men in organizations.
