Honoring Amazing Alumni at Homecoming
The Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve University is proud to announce the 2017 recipients of The Alumni Association Awards. Please join us as the awards are bestowed during this year’s Homecoming Luncheon at CWRU's Tinkham Veale University Center at noon on Friday, October 6.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD: JEAN MURELL CAPERS (EDU '32)
Capers was the first African-American woman elected to Cleveland’s City Council, served as special counsel to the Ohio Attorney General, was an original member of the Women’s Advisory Council of Employment Services and a Cleveland Municipal Judge. With sadness, this award will be bestowed posthumously, as Judge Jean Murrell Capers passed away in July.
PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: JOHN P. CLAYPOOL (ADL '70)
Claypool has realized success in the field of architecture and city planning while working in the administrations of two Philadelphia mayors and serving as the executive director of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
NEWTON D. BAKER DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD: DAVID A. G. JOHNSON JR. (WRC '73)
Johnson currently serves on the board of directors for The Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve University and served CWRU’s New York Alumni Association. Johnson has served his community as a mentor for student teachers/graduate students at Queens College, The City University of New York and St. John’s University, as president and trustee of the Schomburg Corporation, the chairman of the board for the Cinque Gallery and on advisory committees for Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute and the Romare Bearden Foundation.
DANIEL T. CLANCY ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD: JAMES B. TRELEAVEN (CIT '69, GRS '90, management)
For 47 years, Treleaven has been involved with The Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve University, Case Alumni Association, Spartan Club and several university committees, as well as hosted alumni and prospective students and generously supported CWRU fundraising.
YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD: JIAJIA VERONICA XU (LAW '08)
In addition to her substantial involvement in the community, Xu works as international and corporate lawyer and an instructor with the Law and Leadership Institute, sponsored by the Ohio Supreme Court.

- Meet and greet: Manoj K. Malhotra, the new dean of the Weatherhead School of Management, and legendary caricature artist Tom Bachtell (WRC '80)

Fall Convocation 2017
Each academic year opens with the Fall Convocation. Held during the first week of the fall semester, the event features an academic procession and a keynote speaker.
The 2017 Elaine G. Hadden Distinguished Visiting Author and convocation keynote speaker is Sarah Vowell, author of Lafayette in the Somewhat United States (Riverhead). Vowell's book, an unconventional and often humorous telling of American history, was selected as this year’s common reading. Each year, the university’s common reading book serves as a basis for programs and discussions for first-year students from orientation through fall semester.

Case Western Reserve University's International Friendship Program helps students transition to life in the U.S., offers hosts the unique opportunity to learn about diverse nationalities and cultures and serves as a springboard for friendships that last beyond a student's time at CWRU.
