Alumni Volunteer Spotlight: Volunteer with The Maltz Performing Arts Center
Volunteer contributions are vital to the success of The Maltz Performing Arts Center's concerts, lectures and special events. A new volunteer program is in the works for this new CWRU partnership. Ushers are needed for the following upcoming events:
- Monday, May 2: On Campus Screening of “Captain America: Civil War.” High-profile public event starting at 8 p.m., ushers arrive at 6 p.m.
- Saturday, May 14: CWRU Annual Student Awards Assembly 4:30 p.m., ushers arrive at 3:30 p.m.
- Sunday, May 15: Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences Commencement ceremony at 11:45 a.m., ushers arrive at 10:45 a.m.
- Tuesday, June 7: E-Prep Junior High School Commencement, (time TBA)
- Sunday, June 12: Shavout Service, Temple-Tifereth Israel, 11 a.m., ushers arrive at 10:30 a.m.
The Maltz Performing Arts Center is located on East 105th Street in Cleveland, just north of Chester Avenue, in the newly renovated Temple building. Confirmed ushers will be offered free parking. Dress code for ushers is business casual.

Lilith Freed Wins CWRU Pride LGBT Ohio Leadership Award
Sophomore Lilith Freed has recently won the Case Western Reserve University Pride LGBT Ohio Leadership Scholarship, sponsored by The Alumni Association of CWRU. The purpose of the award is to provide recognition and financial assistance to undergraduate or graduate students working to advance the mission of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community at CWRU, the Cleveland community, or nationally through scholarship, research or leadership activities.
Freed has been involved with Spectrum, the LGBTA student group at CWRU, since being elected vice president during the fall semester of their freshman year. They have also increased education and activism through organizing events such as the Drag Ball and pushing for Gender inclusive Housing on campus. With this award, Freed helps give more CWRU students the opportunity to attend the annual Midwestern Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Ally College Conference (MBLGTACC) hosted by the Purdue University Crossroads Coalition. Their hope is that stronger advocacy, and messages of inspiration will be brought back to the campus community and student organizations.
The selection committee included an alumni representative from CWRU Pride, a representative from the Career Center and a representative from the Office of Inclusion, Diversity & Equal Opportunity. Chris Hook (CWR’03), a member of the selection committee, says, “[the] committee was impressed with Lilith's application and [is] looking forward to helping attain their vision of strengthening Spectrum's leadership and growth through attending the conference.” Applications were reviewed and Freed was selected based on their strong commitment to Spectrum and desire to grow in a role that the conference will be able to provide.
Hudson Relays Recap
On April 23, alumni, graduate and undergraduate students gathered in teams to compete in the 106thHudson Relays. Though a cold morning, runners joined together on the Case Quad by Adelbert Hall to see who would come in first place.
Beginning in 1910, the Hudson Relays was created to commemorate the 26 mile move from Hudson to Cleveland that took place in 1882. Today, the event celebrates this tradition with a five lap course around campus. Teams of up to 50 runners are assigned half-mile legs that include elephant stairs, North Residential Village and the final “President’s Lap,” a loop up the binary walkway and around the Quad.
This year’s first place prize went to the junior class---their third win in a row, which puts them in the running for a four year win and celebratory champagne and steak dinner.
The alumni team of 44 runners and a spirted pace car came in fifth place with a time of a little over two hours.

Mother's Day Race
This Mother’s Day, Patti Berns (DEN '84, DEN '86) and her family invite the CWRU community to lace-up and run for a great cause. The Raceis a 5K run and one-mile walk and one-mile run, which takes place at Legacy Village every year on Mother's Day. The Race was started 13 years ago by Berns’ children Josh and Danielle, then ages 13 and 11, as they experienced their friend's mother lose her battle with breast cancer. Patti Berns, today, a 10-year survivor, was diagnosed with breast cancer weeks before The Race’s second year. To show their support and to show that kids can make a difference by raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research, the Berns family began Kids for the Cure, which became The Race.
Four years ago, The Race partnered with Effective Leadership Academy so that high school students from the Greater Cleveland area could develop leadership, teamwork and organizational skills as they work on the implementation and fundraising efforts for The Race. Since all expenses are underwritten, 100% of the proceeds are donated directly for breast cancer research. This year's beneficiary is University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center.

USG Alumni Scholarship
This newly founded USG Alumni Scholarship Fund will support at least one undergraduate student, who shows leadership promise, for their four years. The goal of the fund is to raise $25,000 by spring 2016.

Nominate: The Alumni Association's Awards
If you know someone who has made an exceptional contribution to CWRU community or has been an outstanding member of their field or profession, consider nominating them for The Alumni Association's 2016 awards. Categories include: Distinguished Alumni Award, Professional Achievement, Young Alumni Award, Daniel T. Clancy Alumni Service Award and Newton D. Baker Distinguished Service Award.
Nominations submitted before May 30 will be included in consideration for 2016 awards. Recipients will be honored and receive their award on campus at the alumni awards luncheon hosted during homecoming/reunion weekend October 13-16.

The Linsalata Alumni Center Expansion Update
Since last month, and thanks to our great Spring weather, there has been significant progress on the expansion of the Linsalata Alumni Center.
- Four trades have been working on site: masonry, plumbers, electricians and ironworkers;
- The footers and foundation for the entire building has been laid;
- Exterior and interior walls have been constructed;
- Under-slab plumbing has been roughed in and passed inspection;
- Structural steel erection has begun
- Construction is still scheduled to be completed by late October, with possible occupancy by the end of year.
