Legacy Luncheon

As the new academic year began, The Alumni Association and Board President Jeff Verespej (CWR ‘07, MGT ‘11)  welcomed a new class of legacy students (incoming students with alumni family members) and their families during a luncheon the Frank N. and Jocelyne K. Linsalata Alumni Center of Case Western Reserve University on August 21. See the pictures on our Facebook page! 

Summer on the Cuyahoga

The summer of 2017 brought another successful Summer on the Cuyahoga, a unique program that combines a summer internship with an immersive, Cleveland-centric experience for select students from Case Western Reserve, Colgate, Cornell, Denison, Ohio Wesleyan, Smith, University of Chicago and Yale. This year’s events included a Welcome Picnic at the home of Gail Metcalfe (MGT '87) and a Goodbye Picnic at the home of Angela Lowery (MGT '13)

SOTC's mission is to recruit talented college students for summer internships and a unique immersion into the community with the ultimate goal of having graduates build networks and permanently locate in Greater Cleveland. SOTC is driven by alumni volunteers and mentors. Young African Leaders Initiative

Launched in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship is the Young African Leaders' flagship program, offering up to 1,000 African civic, business and community leaders aged 25–35 the opportunity to attend six weeks of academic coursework, leadership training and networking events at U.S. universities. 2017 marked the first year CWRU has participated in the program.

For many of the Mandela Washington Fellows, the experience was their first trip to the United States. We were excited to host them for breakfast at the Frank N. and Jocelyne K. Linsalata Alumni Center of Case Western Reserve University and offer them the opportunity to meet Cleveland-area employers and the university community during a networking event at BOP STOP at The Music Settlement, a live performance and music education venue with sweeping views of Lake Erie. CWRU + the Young African Leaders

Summer Send-offs

Each Summer, The Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve University invites alumni, current students, parents and friends to join us as we welcome incoming students and their families to the CWRU community. Bay Area Summer Send-Off

On August 5, alumni joined incoming students and their families for the Bay Area Summer Send-Off. CWRU Trustee Sam Jadallah (CIT '87; far left) and his wife Kathy opened their home for the event, which was also attended by CWRU Trustee Ted Schroeder (CIT '80; GRS '80, mathematics; third from right). Jadallah's son, Eric, currently attends CWRU.

Chicago Summer Send-Off

Also on August 5, Chicago's Summer Send-off, hosted by James B. Treleaven (CIT '69; GRS '90, management) and wife Cheryl, welcomed incoming students and their families to the CWRU community.

New York Summer Send-Off

On August 6, New York’s Summer Send-off took place at the Lucky Strike bowling alley in Manhattan.

Cincinnati Summer Send-Off

On August 12, alumni and current students at the Cincinnati Summer Send-Off welcomed nine members of the Class of 2021.

Cleveland Summer Send-Off

On August 12, the Cleveland Summer Send-off at the Frank N. and Jocelyne K. Linsalata Alumni Center of Case Western Reserve University featured oversized board games, 25 incoming students and The Alumni Association Board Member Jessica Malone (CWR ‘10).

Columbus Summer Send-Off

On August 13, the alumni and current students at the Columbus Summer Send-off welcomed 14 members of the Class of 2021.

This year’s Day of Giving, a daylong fundraising event held on June 14, 
saw record-setting results, with 1,824 donors giving more than $460,000! 

Learn About the Class of '21 and Help Find the Class of '22

This fall, classes at Case Western Reserve University began with about 1,300 new first-year students. To enroll this class of exceptional individuals, the Office of Undergraduate Admission reviewed a record-breaking 25,379 applications from all around the United States and 41 different countries. Of particular interest, 12% of the incoming class had a family member attend CWRU which is a wonderful testament to the student experience and alumni engagement here. 

The Alumni Admission Ambassadors Program plays a pivotal role in the enrollment success at CWRU. Currently there are over 1,500 alumni who have volunteered to be an Ambassador, assisting undergraduate admission to recruit and enroll the next best incoming class. This past year, Alumni Ambassadors conducted over 1,200 off-campus interviews, attended nearly 100 college fairs and participated an extensive array of events and functions. As application numbers surge, student qualifications intensify, and geographic reach of the application pool extends to all corners of the world, there is a growing need to increase the number of Alumni Admission Ambassadors. Volunteering to attend recruitment events like college fairs, or conducting alumni interviews in your city can be a wonderful way to stay engaged with your alma mater. By sharing your experiences at Case Western Reserve University and the influence those experiences have had on your life, you may help a prospective student make their own college choice… hopefully CWRU. 

Thomas Fanning, associate director, Undergraduate Admission

A new coordinator is managing the Ambassador Program. Thomas Fanning joined the undergraduate admission staff after many years of experience in college admission and advancement. A native of Buffalo, New York, but a proud 30-year resident of Cleveland, Tom is excited to work with everyone who so generously gives their time, enthusiasm and expertise to help the recruitment process at CWRU. The goal of the admission office is to recruit not just prospective students, but future alumni, and his hope is to maximize the natural synergy between admission and alumni relations. Among many initiatives, Tom is looking forward to continuing a strategic relationship with The Alumni Association, increasing the number and geographic reach of the ambassadors, improving our effectiveness and efficiency, increasing training opportunities, and ensuring we recognize and thank the alumni that do such great work. September’s Writers Center Stage features Colson Whitehead, author of The New York Times bestseller The Underground Railroad ‌

Colson Whitehead is the author of six novels, including the number one New York Times best-seller The Underground Railroad, for which he received the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction; John Henry Days, for which he received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award; and Apex Hides the Hurt, for which he received the PEN/Oakland Award. Whitehead is a past recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship.

The 2017-2018 William N. Skirball Writers Center Stage Series is presented by the Cuyahoga County Public Library Foundation and Case Western Reserve University. Funds raised by this series help support Cuyahoga County Public Library, the nation's top-rated library system for eight consecutive years.

Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, is the 2017 recipient of the Inamori Ethics Prize honoring outstanding international ethical leaders whose actions and influence have greatly improved the condition of humankind.

We will celebrate the accomplishments of Mrs. Edelman with two events that are free and open to the public:

Sharing Your Advice

Each year, groups of alumni are sent a survey during which they are asked to write a welcome message to new students - sharing a favorite campus memory or piece of advice. Those messages are printed on post-it notes and inserted into the programs for the University Welcome event held during orientation to welcome first-year and incoming transfer students to campus.
