The Freedman Fellows Program is now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Freedman Fellowships are year-long fellowships for CWRU faculty to develop research projects over the course of an academic year with targeted funding and support from technical experts and subject-matter specialists at Kelvin Smith Library. Fellowships are open to current CWRU faculty, researchers, and instructors in any discipline.
Freedman Fellowships are intended to support the planning, development, and deployment of digital research projects or innovative technology-enabled instruction. See some examples of past projects. Applicants may request funding amounts up to $15,000. However, awarded amounts will vary depending on the scope of the project and the number of awarded applicants.
This year, the fellowship selection committee is especially interested in supporting projects that advance issues relating to generative Artificial Intelligence and/or its related concepts in academic research or teaching (Generative Adversarial Networks, Large Language Models, Machine Learning, etc.). In addition, projects that advance issues of current social concern or importance may receive special attention from the selection committee.
Applications are due by Friday, March 7, 2025. All potential applicants are required to schedule a 30-minute consultation with KSL staff to discuss their potential project before submitting an application. To schedule a consultation, please contact freedmanfellows@case.edu. We encourage scheduling quickly to ensure we can accommodate all applicants.
