New Digital Exhibit: Did You Know? Black History at CWRU. This online exhibit illuminates Black scholarship, excellence, and the University’s concerted engagement in African American Civil Rights, support of Black scholars, and its spirit of equality and change. The university has produced prominent Black leaders, such as the first African American Congressman elected in Ohio, Louis Stokes, and the U.S. Congressional Representative of the Ohio 11th district, Stephanie Tubbs Jones. KSL Features: Afrofuturism
Visit the KSL Features exhibit on the first floor and explore librarian-selected titles from the library’s collection highlighting the theme of Afrofuturism. Borrow titles from the display like Kwanza Osajyefo’s comic Black AF: America’s Sweetheart, poignant short stories in N.K. Jemisin’s How Long ‘til Black Future Month?,or Hugo Canuto’s fantastical graphic novel Tales of the Orishas. The display will be on view until Friday, February 14.

Karamu Artists Inc.: Printmaking, Race, and Community – special event with CWRU collections and staff
Join the Kelvin Smith Library Special Collections staff, CWRU faculty, Cleveland Museum of Art curators, and Tony Sias, President of Karamu House, on Monday, February 10 at 7 PM at the Lee Rd. Branch of the Cleveland Heights Libraries for a special speaker event. The focus will be on the upcoming exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art: “Karamu Artists Inc.: Printmaking, Race, and Community.”

KSL Special Collections staff will discuss the Karamu House Archive and the Works Progress Administration Print Collection, highlighting the contributions of African American artists in Cleveland. Featured artists include Charles Sallée, Elmer William Brown, and Hughie Lee Smith, who launched their careers at Karamu House. The library acquired the Karamu House archives in 2021, which include records of the theater's administration, governance, educational services, and creative endeavors. The WPA Print Collection, deposited in the 1970s, contains over 260 prints created in Cleveland during the Great Depression to promote art by, of, and for the people.
