As part of our continued support for digital scholarship, as well as the general enjoyment of the CWRU community, the Freedman Center lends a variety of equipment.
We offer a variety of items from video cameras to still cameras, from audio recorders to projectors, tablets, screen calibration units, digital microscopes, tripods, and more!
Most of the equipment we lend are on display next to the Service Center on the first floor of Kelvin Smith Library. Few items, such as tripod and screens, are not on display.

Where, How, and Who?
All the equipment is lent at the Service Center on the first floor of Kelvin Smith Library. CWRU students, faculty, & staff, as well as CIM students & staff with library accounts in good standing are welcome to borrow equipment.
Several items (such as the GoPro cameras, the Ricoh Theta cameras, and the thermal imaging cameras) have more complex kits and require a (brief) consultation before they can be borrowed. These items are lent only by appointment. To setup an appointment email firstname.lastname@example.org. Specialty items are returned to the Freedman Center.
There is no cost to borrow any of the equipment.
Most equipment lends for 2 nights. Some items (such as analog headphones or accessories for use in the Freedman Center) have an 8 hour loan period and do not leave the library. We recommend against asking or letting friends return equipment for you.
If you are unsure of an item’s loan duration, ask at the Service Center upon checkout or check your library account to avoid fines.
Due to limited supply, loaned equipment is not renewable and cannot be re-checked out on the same day due.
Equipment must be returned to Service Center staff before the Service Center closes.
Returns made on the due date after Service Center closing will be considered late. When returning equipment, do not just drop it on the counter, please wait for staff to confirm that all equipment has been cleared from your account.
Devices, 2-night loan: $5.00 per day late
Accessories for devices, 2-night loan: $2.00 per day late
Devices, hourly loan: $5.00 per hour late
Damage and Replacement Fees
Borrowers assume the responsibility of keeping items secure and in proper working condition throughout the loan. Each piece of equipment is inspected by staff upon return. If damage is suspected, the borrower will be notified if any further action is required.
If during your loan the item stops working properly, please let us know as soon as possible.
For equipment that is damaged, lost, or stolen, fees will be assessed. As the cost of each device varies, so does the replacement fee. We cannot accept equipment purchased by the borrower as a substitute.
