Culture and Bioethics in France

This course is open to undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students from any discipline.

Course Description

French society has undergone significant change in recent years due to various circumstances including, but not limited to, the growth of minority and immigrant populations, more open borders as a member of the European Union, and global political shifts.  This course examines the impact of such changes in the bioethical context.  Particular attention will be paid to understandings of the rights and responsibilities of the individual and the collective, physician to patient communication and relationships, and interactions with and treatment of minorities in the clinical and research contexts. Students will have the opportunity to attend relevant lectures and discussion groups and participate in tours related to the course focus.

Pre-travel class sessions: TBA (likely to be 2-3 Wednesday evenings)

In-country course dates: March 9-14, 2025

Lodging dates: March 8-16, 2025

Post-travel class sessions: TBA

 

Approximate Cost

Cost for Spring 2025:

  • $2950 (including deposit)
  • $250 deposit due with study abroad application
  • Remaining program fee billed to CWRU student bill

Program fees cover lodging, breakfast, course-related transportation, speaker fees, etc. Program fees do not cover flight, tuition, additional meals, passport or VISA fees, and activities or transportation outside of course.

Application Information

Deadline to apply is January 24, 2025. Spots are filled at a first come, first serve basis, so the course could close our before the deadline. 

To apply students must complete the following:

  1. Complete the pre-decision application for the course through the Office of Education Abroad. 
  2. Interview with the Director of Bioethics Study Abroad, Dr. Leah Jeunnette on Zoom or in-person.
  3. Pay your $250 non-refundable deposit after your meeting.

After completing Steps 1-3, students may Rrquest permission and register for the course in SIS.

 

*Courses are subject to cancellation due to low student enrollment, health and safety concerns, or other extenuating circumstances. The Director of Bioethics Study Abroad will communicate with students regarding any changes.
