To the Case Western Reserve community,
In recent months, Case Western Reserve staff members have spent time reviewing existing university policies and procedures and, where necessary, revising or developing new ones to fill gaps and provide clarity. We then shared these new or adjusted policies and guidelines with leaders of student government, Faculty Senate and the Staff Advisory Council to review and enhance, based on their experiences in and advocacy for their communities.
We write today to encourage you to read each of the following in full.
- CWRU’s new tabling policy explains who is permitted to “table” to raise awareness for causes or events, where they can do so, how they can reserve the space, what rules need to be followed and more. This policy unifies various tabling policies for locations across campus into one with consistent rules and procedures.
- An updated posting policy outlines where informational and promotional materials can and cannot be posted, how long materials can remain, and where and how chalking can occur, among other points.
- The policy does not impact a faculty member’s rights to post materials in connection with approved academic courses/programs. These academic postings will be governed by the applicable school and/or department’s posting policies and/or practices.
- The Faculty Senate and Student Presidents’ Roundtable will continue to review the Posting Policy, and the university will update this version when these reviews are completed.
- A unified Student Advocacy and Spirit Wall Policy was announced to students last week. This policy explains the purpose of each wall, as well as who can use each, what is permitted for posting and what will occur if postings do not comply.
- A clear outline of student organization recognition and standing is now available. It explains the benefits afforded to recognized student groups in good standing versus those that are informal, inactive, becoming recognized or not in good standing. Such benefits include university funding and resources, an official CWRU website, room reservation system access, use of the university name, and more.
The tabling and posting policies—which apply to faculty, staff, students and postdocs—also provide information on violations or non-compliance, including activities that conflict with the Freedom of Expression Policy, the Student or Employee Code of Conduct, and the Policy on Political Activity, among others.
We want to thank the individuals across campus who have provided invaluable insights to ensure these policies and procedures reflect how our university community operates, as well as how students, faculty, staff, students and postdocs can continue to communicate most effectively with their peers.
Thank you in advance for your careful consideration of these updated policies and guidelines.
Sincerely,
Joy K. Ward
