The Center for Civic Engagement & Learning plans a day each semester called Saturday of Service where a number of on- and off-campus service opportunities are available students. This fall, Saturday of Service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024.

Starting Thursday, October 10, register in Campus Groups! 

Project Description Times (includes transportation!)
Ozanam Center Food + Clothing Distribution Register and check in and out clients, sort and hang clothing, pack grocery bags, sort food donations, and offer hospitality. Project may include lifting bags and/or boxes and standing on your feet for the duration of the service. 8:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
The Gathering Place Craft Making Bring in garden furniture to prepare for winter. Then, help make a craft that will be given to program participants. 9:15 am - 12:30 pm
North Union Farmers' Market Inventory Help prepare for the upcoming farmers market season by taking inventory of equipment, assessing its condition, and performing necessary repairs. This work directly supports local farmers and vendors. This hands-on project offers a great opportunity to develop practical skills while contributing to a thriving community event. 9:15 am - 1:30 pm
Purple Oasis Garden Farm Winter Preparation Planting fall crops in high tunnels; weeding, watering and preparing beds for winter.  Adding solar panels to roof of high tunnels; harvesting fruit from orchard.. 9:15 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Coit Road Farmers' Markets Winterization

*AVAILABLE FOR GROUP ADOPTION*

The Coit Road Farmers' Market has a number of garden beds that need to be prepared for the winter season.  This can involve cutting down and adding mulch to plant beds. There may also be some painting and arranging storage areas.

Euclid Creek Bush and Tree Removal

Assist with small invasive bush and tree removal on a wetland preserve in Highland Heights. The task will involve use of shovels, loppers and clippers.

Shoes and Clothes for Kids

*AVAILABLE FOR GROUP ADOPTION*

Counting, organizing and sorting inventory; Stocking and displaying inventory on our store shelves;  Fulfilling on-line orders;  Stuffing uniform packages and backpacks with supplies.

9:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Hope Lodge Kitchen Clean-Out Clean out the Hope Lodge kitchen, wiping out drawers and cabinets and reorganizing everything. Other minor cleaning projects may also be requested.  9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Cleveland Cultural Gardens Clean-Up

Historic Gardens are in need of raking, cleanup and bulb planting.

9:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.
Cleveland Botanical Power of Plants Activities Power of Plants is an educational program that highlights the many benefits that plants provide and teaches kids that people need plants to survive. Volunteers will monitor one of the 10 activity stations, which may focus on products, shelter, careers, and health & wellness. Volunteers should be comfortable engaging kids and their caregivers with fun activities that are also educational! 9:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.
Project Sunshine Activity Craft Kits *On Campus!* Project Sunshine will be packing Activity Craft Kits for pediatric patients. These activity kits will be sent to our partner hospitals, giving kids a chance to do complete art activities during their hospital stay! 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Garden@Case Clean-Up and Sowing Seeds *On Campus!* Clear out weeds encroaching on the berm surrounding the garden and clean up some dead plant material in the beds so they can prep them for Fall/Winter crops. If we have time, volunteers may sow seeds. 11:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Church of the Covenant Kitchen and Pantry *On Campus!* Church of the Covenant serves over 140 families each month with our hot meals program. We could really use some help organizing our pantry and giving our kitchen a deep clean. Your volunteerism will help us serve those in need with a spotless kitchen.  12:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Kids' Book Bank Sorting and Packing Sort and pack the books by reading level so that partner sites can distribute them accordingly.   12:30 – 3:15 p.m.

SpartanTHON Color Run 5k

*On Campus!* Direct runners and walkers along the 5k route and hand out water as needed. This event is a fundraiser for Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.
