Maintaining Status as a J-1 Student Intern

J-1 student interns and their supervisors each play key roles in ensuring that federal regulations are being followed for the duration of the internship. These roles and responsibilities are outlined below.

Student Responsibilities

It is important that J-1 student interns maintain legal status by complying with applicable federal government regulations. By definition, student interns are fulfilling requirements for an overseas degree by engaging in activities outlined on Form DS-7002. If any details change on the DS-7002, it must be updated and sent to the VISA Office.

Initial Registration Requirements

All new J-1 student interns must report to the VISA Office within 30 days of the start date on their Forms DS-2019.

Maintain Required Health Insurance

J-1 student interns and their J-2 dependents must maintain required health insurance (including basic Medical Health Insurance and Medical Evacuation and Repatriation insurance) throughout their stay in the United States. Upon check-in, J-1 student interns are required to complete the Health Insurance Certification form. Information about suggested plans can be found on this form.

Change of Residential Address

Immigration regulations require that all non-citizens report their residential addresses within 10 days of entry to the United States and subsequently report any changes of address within 10 days. Changes of address should be reported to the VISA Office and to USCIS.

Required Travel Documents

J-1 visa holders are required to have a valid travel signature on their DS-2019 form in order to be allowed re-entry to the US. Please request a travel signature through Terra Dotta here. Please allow 2-3 business days for a travel signature.

In addition to the signed DS-2019, the student should carry their passport with valid J-1 visa in order to re-enter the US during the valid internship period.

Faculty Responsibilities

J-1 Student Interns and supervisors are required by federal immigration regulations to submit evaluations to confirm that the program objectives are met. Student Interns and their supervisors must complete and submit this evaluation form to the VISA Office in a timely manner.

  • For internships less than 6 months in duration, only a Final Evaluation must be submitted prior to the end of the internship.
  • For internships lasting more than 6 months, two evaluations are required: one Midpoint Evaluation and one Final Evaluation. The midpoint evaluation must be submitted half-way through the internship period. The final evaluation must be submitted prior to the end of the internship.
