CWRU Climbs in the Rankings
Case Western Reserve climbed to 40th in this year’s U.S. News & World Report undergraduate rankings of national universities. Additionally, the new Health Education Campus of Case Western Reserve and Cleveland Clinic now stands as the nation’s 24th-ranked research medical school. In the same rankings report, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences held its ranking of No. 9 among the nation’s social work programs and the Weatherhead School of Management’s part-time MBA program climbed to the 22nd spot.
A campus-wide effort to improve Case Western Reserve’s global rankings made progress with two of the world’s most influential lists. The university came in at 119th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, a jump of 13 positions over 2018. Also, the QS World University Rankings saw the university leap 19 spots over last year to take the 167th spot.

About the 2019 Alumni Award Recipients
Young Alumni Award recipient JP Graulty (CWR ‘10), nominated by Samantha Cocco of the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, serves the community in a variety of roles. Graulty is a healthcare navigator for Cleveland Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services, as well as a board member for the Interreligious Task Force on Central America and the Coalition with Young Adults. Previously the assistant director, community partnerships for John Carroll University, Graulty recently chose to return here to his alma mater to work as a program manager for the Community Innovation Network at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.
The Daniel T. Clancy Alumni Service Award honors the legacy of Dan Clancy (LAW ‘62), former executive director of University Alumni Relations and former Associate Dean of the Law School, and honors an outstanding Case Western Reserve graduate who has been an active member of the alumni community for at least 15 years and has made significant contributions to The Alumni Association and its programs. This year’s recipient is Nikki DiFilippo (MGT ‘94) was nominated by fellow alumna Susan Raia (WRC ‘83, MGT ‘85) and Senior Director of Alumni Relations of Weatherhead School of Management Shirley Reynolds. DiFilippo is a past president of the board of The Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve and the Weatherhead School of Management Alumni Board. An active volunteer with the university, she has served on numerous committees and in a variety of other positions. It is also worth noting that, in addition to her service to Case Western Reserve, DiFilippo is active in Opera Cleveland, the Cleveland Chapter of the American Marketing Association, Cleveland Rowing, Leadership Cleveland and JumpStart Inc., a nonprofit committed to accelerating the success of diverse entrepreneurs.
The Newton D. Baker Distinguished Service Award, which is given for outstanding service to the university, honors the legacy of former Cleveland Mayor and U.S. Secretary of War Newton D. Baker and recognizes significant service to the university by any alumnus or alumna, staff member, faculty or friend who has given their time, expertise or leadership to ensure the prolonged welfare of the institution for generations to come. This year’s recipient, Director of Alumni Relations in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations for CWRU’s School of Dental Medicine Sara Fields has worked in alumni relations for nearly 20 years for the School of Dental Medicine and was nominated for her efforts by School of Dental Medicine Alumnus Mario Pavicic (DEN ‘90, ‘92). When not working, Fields lends her energy and expertise to community organizations, including the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a sorority of college-educated women dedicated to public service with an emphasis on programs that target the African American community, and The Singing Angels, an organization that encourages positive youth development through music and performing arts education. In 2014, she was feted for her dedicated service by Cleveland’s Forest City Dental Society.
The Professional Achievement Award recognizes a graduate of Case Western Reserve who has achieved exceptional accomplishment in their career and has brought distinction to themselves and to the university through leadership in their professional community. This year’s recipient, Moses Joloba (GRS ‘96, ‘03, pathology), was nominated by Janet McGrath, a professor of Case Western Reserve’s Anthropology Department. Throughout his career, Joloba has conducted extensive research on infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, pneumococcus and malaria. In addition to his position as a professor of Molecular Biology, Immunology and Microbiology and the current Dean of the School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Health Sciences at Makerere University, Dr. Joloba is a TB laboratory consultant for the World Health Organization. He currently serves as a reviewer for six journals, has trained and mentored 37 masters and 20 PhD students to the completion of their studies, has published more than 180 peer-reviewed papers and has obtained numerous grants to further studies and programs. Beyond his amazing achievements and global reach related to the field of infectious diseases, Joloba’s love for Case Western Reserve is another thing in his life that has proven contagious. His daughter began her first year at CWRU this fall.
The 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing a graduate who has achieved extraordinary distinction in a career rooted at Case Western Reserve University and who has provided meritorious service to the university, was presented to Robert P. Madison (ARC ‘48, HON ‘04). After graduating from Western Reserve University’s School of Architecture in 1948, Madison earned a Master’s degree in architecture from Harvard University and completed additional studies as a Fulbright Scholar at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France. Overcoming racial barriers, Madison became the first African American registered architect in Ohio in 1950. Since then, he has gone on to open the first African American owned architecture firm in Ohio, Robert P Madison International, Inc. and leave his mark locally, nationally and internationally as the company’s major projects have included the Nuclear Facility at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, the Cleveland Browns Stadium and the United States Embassy in Dakar, Senegal. Madison is a CWRU Emeritus Trustee and has been honored as a CWRU Trailblazer, a university initiative celebrating those distinguished Case Western Reserve University alumni, faculty, and administrators of color and women.

Homecoming Celebration Kicked-Off CWRU’s Oral History Project
The Oral History Project is a joint effort by The Alumni Association and the Office for Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity. The Alumni Association is collecting alumni stories. So far, completed interviews with Dan Clancy (LAW '62), Nancy Fink (WRC '73) and Fred Gray, JD (LAW '54, HON ‘92) have been posted on YouTube, with additional alumni interviews conducted over Homecoming Weekend. These stories will be archived in the Kelvin Smith Library’s electronic archive, Digital Case.

Siegal Lifelong Learning Reach Out to Alumni Overseas
The Alumni Association of CWRU, in partnership with the Laura & Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program, organized alumni dinners in Beijing and Shanghai to compliment the CWRU Educational Travel Program to China and Tibet. Through the travel program, alumni and family members enjoyed traveling with James Godfrey, a specialist in Chinese and Central Asian works of art and Chinese history and a lecturer in the Case Western Reserve University Siegal Lifelong Learning Program. Through the guidance of alumnus Roger Wei (CWR ‘96), a member of The Alumni Association Board of Directors, the evening in Beijing was organized by alumnus Xue Zhexiao (MGT ’13) and the dinner in Shanghai was organized by alumna Xie Yi Jun (MGT ’14). Both travelers and local alumni had a great time.
Every year, CWRU Siegal Lifelong Learning offers a variety of travel opportunities to global destinations led by faculty members with expertise that enhance the experience. The carefully crafted itineraries offer unique access and insight into diverse regions. Students Arrive on Campus Esteemed for Diversity
In August, the university welcomed more than 1,200 new students, bringing the total to 5,150 undergraduate students and 6,674 graduate and professional students enrolled at the university. They arrived on a campus that recently received the 2019 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, a diversity-focused publication in higher education.

Former Interim President’s New Book
On Monday, November 4, the CWRU community is invited to Join Case Western Reserve University President Barbara R. Snyder and author Gregory L. Eastwood, MD (MED '66) to celebrate the release of Eastwood’s latest book. With Finishing Our Story: Preparing for the End of Life, Eastwood, a physician and ethicist, draws from his substantial experience with patients and families to provide information that will help us think clearly about the choices and issues we will face at the end of our loved ones' lives and our own. Held at the Powell Room of the Allen Memorial Library, Dr. Eastwood's presentation will be followed by a Q & A session, book signing and reception.
Eastwood served as interim president of Case Western Reserve University from 2006-07, after which he directed the Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence at the university from 2007-08. Eastwood is a 1966 graduate of Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine and has been an active member of the Board of Trustees since 2003. Currently, Gregory L. Eastwood, MD is a university professor at the State University of New York (SUNY).
2019-20 Think Forum Offers Attendees Something to Think About
CWRU’s 2019-2020 Think Forum lecture series features a playwright who has been compared to dramatist Arthur Miller, one of TIME’s most influential people, a psychology professor who studies compassion, love and meaning, and the co-founder of a company that helps people take back their lives in the digital age.
All lectures are free and begin at 6 p.m. at the Maltz Performing Arts Center. Paid parking is available on site and a free shuttle service will be available from campus. Events are free, but pre-registration is required. Reservations for the fall lectures are available now, and for the spring lectures starting January 3.

Look at the Opioid Epidemic
CWRU, Siegal Lifelong Learning and the CWRU School of Medicine present The Opioid Epidemic: Where Are We Now?, the latest look at a health crisis that has gripped the nation, will be held at Siegal Lifelong Learning’s Landmark Centre Building in Beachwood, Ohio, on Sunday, December 8. For medical professionals and attorneys seeking credit, this lecture has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit and is CLE pending for 5 credit hours. Registration is required. Lunch and breakfast are provided.

The Alumni Association’s Summer Spent with Alumni Abroad
On July 27, nearly 60 alumni, family members and current students gathered in Taipei for the Taipei Alumni Chapter annual meeting and reception. President of the Taipei Chapter Francis Ou (MGT '00) and current President of The Alumni Association Board of Directors Allison Olenginki (CWR '01) made welcoming remarks and gave a university update. The event was planned and attended by Chamois Williams, director, alumni engagement for The Alumni Association.
On July 28, alumni and families in London enjoyed a tour of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Hosted by Linda Robson (GRS ‘15, organizational behavior), the group learned about the living plant collections, conservation work and research programs, and explored the grounds featuring glass artwork from iconic artist Dale Chihuly’s collection Chihuly: Reflections on Nature.
In August, alumni and current students in Beijing and Shanghai welcomed nearly 100 incoming undergraduate students and their parents to the CWRU community. Alumni chapter leaders Nina Xie (MGT '13) and Zhexiao Xue (MGT '16) and current Alumni Association Board Member Roger Wei (CWR '96) helped organize the events, which included remarks by Kate McCreary (MGT '19), senior director for alumni relations, The Alumni Association; Liana Carroll associate director of undergraduate admission, Undergraduate Admission; and Elizabeth Miller, assistant director of international student services, Center for International Affairs.

Alumni Participate in Bay Area Visit by Current Undergrads
On October 21, The Alumni Association Board Member Magda Marcel (CWR ‘10, third from left) hosted a visiting group of CWRU undergraduate business and engineering students at her company, Slack Technologies, developer of a cloud-based instant messaging platform, during the group’s visit to the Bay Area. Marcel was one of several alumni who participated in the trip, organized by Michael Goldberg, an associate professor of design and innovation at the Weatherhead School of Management, allowing students who apply and are accepted to this program participate in a fully-funded, innovation-focused trip.
CWRU To Participate In International Education Week
The Center for International Affairs invites all CWRU alumni to join the university’s celebration of International Education Week November 18 - 22! A national event, International Education Week highlights the benefits of international education and global exchange. Every year, the Center teams up with campus partners to offer special events throughout the week.
One of the most exciting events will take place on Tuesday, November 19 as CWRU hosts a Naturalization Ceremony where dozens of immigrants to the U.S., now living in the Cleveland area, will become new citizens! Alumni are invited to join the campus community for this moving experience, which will take place on campus from 10-11a.m. in the Thwing Center Ballroom at 11111 Euclid Avenue.
