U.S. MARINE HOSPITAL

The U.S. MARINE HOSPITAL, located on Erie (E. 9th) and Murrison streets, opened in 1852 to provide medical care for sailors in the U.S. Merchant Marine, the Coast Guard, the U.S. Lighthouse, and U.S. veterans. VILLA SANCTA ANNA HOME FOR THE AGED

The VILLA SANCTA ANNA HOME FOR THE AGED, 25000 Chagrin Blvd. in BEACHWOOD, was built in 1959 and dedicated in Jan. 1960. The FIRST CATHOLIC SLOVAK LADIES Assn. built and sponsored the home for poor elderly women and men. The 3-story home, which accommodates 75, cost $1 million to construct and was renovated in 1990.

WAITE, FREDERICK CLAYTON

WELSH HOME

The WELSH HOME, founded in 1911 and opened on Thanksgiving Day, 1919, houses elderly natives of Wales, people of Welsh descent, and their spouses. Mary Jane Hasenpflug and other members of the Women's Welsh Club of Cleveland established the home. WESTERN RESERVE AREA AGENCY ON AGING

The WESTERN RESERVE AREA AGENCY ON AGING (WRAAA), established in 1973 under the mandate of the federal Older Americans Act, has planned and coordinated community-based services for persons 60 years and older living in Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, and Cuyahoga counties. WRAAA is one of 12 regional agencies on aging in Ohio, all part of the National Network on Aging.

WIGGERS, CARL JOHN

WOOD, HARLAND GOFF

WOOD, HARLAND GOFF (2 Sept. 1907-12 Sept. 1991), internationally known scientist and the first director of the Department of Biochemistry at the School of Medicine, CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY (CWRU, 1946-67), proved in 1935 that animals (including humans) and bacteria utilized carbon dioxide.

WOODRUFF MEMORIAL INSTITUTE

WOODRUFF MEMORIAL INSTITUTE (also known as Woodruff Hospital and formerly as Ingleside Hospital), located at 1950 E. 89th St., served as a voluntary short-term psychiatric hospital from 1935-86. In 1959 it was listed as one of the nation's top dozen psychiatric hospitals. Ingleside Hospital was established in a 15-room mansion at 1906 E. 75th St.

WOODRUFF, MABEL ALICE

WOODRUFF, MABEL ALICE (30 Dec. 1893-30 Aug. 1963) was one of Cleveland's first psychiatric social workers and the founder of Ingleside Hospital.
