Enhancing Civility & Connection

Students engaging in discussion

At Case Western Reserve University, we are committed to fostering a learning environment where every member of our community feels respected valued, and empowered to speak freely.

In early 2024, Provost Joy K. Ward launched the Enhancing Civility & Connection initiative. This effort began during a time of global unrest and deep concern, with the goal of encouraging open, thoughtful dialogue across campus. Today, this mission remains as critical as ever.

Civil Discourse Skills for a Stronger Campus

To support this initiative, Provost Ward convened a Civil Discourse Advisory Group, which developed a core list of 10 essential civil discourse skills that all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to explore and practice. These skills are at the heart of a range of university-wide efforts to promote respectful dialogue, deeper understanding, and a greater sense of connection.

Explore Programs and Resources

Throughout the academic year, a variety of events and programs offer opportunities to strengthen these skills and engage with complex issues, including:

  • Critical Conversations: Hear from experts tackling today’s most pressing topics.
  • Hard Conversations: Practice civil discourse in open, informal settings.
  • Wellness Workshops: Take care of yourself and others during challenging times.

Join Us

We invite all members of the campus community to take part in this ongoing work. By listening actively, thinking critically, and approaching others with curiosity and respect, we can continue to make CWRU a model for civil dialogue in higher education.
