The Swetland Center is committed to providing training and professional development to educate the next generation of environmental health researchers and increase research capacity within our community.
The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health provides 8-week summer internships for individuals who are interested in developing their skills and deepening their knowledge of community systems science for environmental health equity. Throughout the experience, interns engage in thought-provoking experiences to address the environment’s disparate impact on communities and populations with a specific focus on advancing capacity in one or more of the Center’s focal areas related to:
- Community engagement for environmental justice
- Ecological, systems, and computational methodologies, or
- Implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of environmental health interventions.
Current Opportunities
Community Food Access Research Intern
The Mary Ann Swetland Center For Environmental Health is recruiting a Community Food Access Research Intern to support the Center's engagement with the Cuyahoga County Hunger Response Team, formed in response to federal legislative changes affecting food access across the county. This internship places students at the center of that response effort, conducting direct field research with food retailers in the five Cuyahoga County zip codes with the highest SNAP utilization trends.

Student-Research Assistant – PSE Implementation
The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health at Case Western Reserve University is supporting implementation of Policy, Systems, and Environmental (PSE) change efforts to increase healthy food choices and active living among Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) consumers across Ohio. A core initiative within this work focuses on enhancing capacity to implement PSE strategies that increase access to healthy foods and promote healthy food choices among SNAP consumers through a statewide mini grant program and enhanced marketing efforts. The Research Assistant (GRA) will provide critical support across all four project objectives, working with statewide, regional, and local networks across Ohio.

Student-Research Assistant – Produce Prescription Technology Development
The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health at Case Western Reserve University is supporting implementation of Policy, Systems, and Environmental (PSE) change efforts to increase healthy food choices and active living among Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) consumers across Ohio. A core initiative within this work focuses on expanding and enhancing produce prescription programming infrastructure to better serve SNAP-eligible populations in Ohio.
The Research Assistant (RA) will provide critical support to the following project: Enhance Produce Prescription Infrastructure to Reach SNAP Recipients. This is a fast-paced, community-engaged evaluation project running through September 30, 2026.
