Third-year Doctor of Business Administration Student Ali Raja and Associate Professor of Design and Innovation Philip Cola, presented a qualitative research paper at the Clinical Translational Science Conference in Chicago on April 20. Their research focuses on the interaction of management and medicine in treating opioid use disorders (OUD) in community based emergency departments (EDs).
The abstract of the presentation is as follows:
Although EDs are often the only sites of care for patients with OUD, a proven medication, buprenorphine, is underutilized by emergency physicians. Our work to date, which aims to discover the underlying reasons for under utilization of ED buprenorphine at community EDs. We used an inductive grounded theory approach and conducted semi-structured interviews to identify emergent factors from experiential accounts of physicians. In this paper session we describe not only our findings, but also the potential interventions that will target these factors, allowing for clinical translation of our findings. We aim to use our example to educate conference attendees regarding the benefits of multidisciplinary collaborations in this case, between management and medical schools in solving complex public health issues.
