Dear Weatherhead Alumni and Friends:

I am writing today to share with you that after considerable thought and reflection, I have decided not to seek reappointment to a second term as the dean of the Weatherhead School of Management. I have informed President Eric Kaler and Provost Ben Vinson of my decision. I am very grateful for their support of my deanship and their contributions to our collective ability to move the needle on many different fronts during my tenure. I will work closely with them and you to complete the AACSB review report and assist with any leadership transitions needed before my term ends on August 31, 2022. The leadership transition details will be announced later.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you. Despite the disruption brought about by a global pandemic, we accomplished a great deal together! Guided by a comprehensive strategic plan that many of the Weatherhead faculty, staff and alumni contributed to, we successfully launched a new and distinctive online MBA program, revamped the curricula of several other graduate programs, built new partnerships both within and beyond CWRU, and grew our research prominence by transitioning from being unranked in 2017 to achieving 85th position among top 100 research universities in USA (as measured by the University of Texas at Dallas list of publications in top tier journals in different fields of management).  Through an enhanced outreach to our alumni and business community, we increased our average yearly attainment by over 40% (since 2004) to raise $36 million over the past five years, of which $13.4 million raised in this past fiscal year alone is the highest since 2001. These new funds will help support future student scholarships, new programmatic initiatives and endowed chairs. With 194 deposits received to date, we will also be bringing in the largest class of undergraduate students in our school’s history representing 10% of CWRU class of 2026. The financial structure and trajectory of management education at Weatherhead have been profoundly altered by new online programming and a nearly 70% increase in undergraduate matriculation rates since fall 2017.

The goals that I had established for the school at the beginning of my tenure, and which we have now realized together, have built the foundation for the next phase of growth and development at Weatherhead.  The mandate for internal change and continuous transformation in the new post-pandemic world will benefit from new leadership, which I hope you will join me in actively supporting to take Weatherhead School of Management to new heights.

It has been a privilege to serve as your dean. I am grateful for the many relationships with alumni and other supporters that have helped and sustained me over the past five years. I would also like to thank President Kaler and Provost Vinson, my fellow deans, as well as many members of university leadership and my visiting committee, without whose active support and help much of what we have achieved together would not have been possible.

I wish you the very best of everything going forward. Stay safe and be well!

Best Regards,

Manoj
