Weatherhead School of Management announced the name change of its Doctor of Management (DM) program to a Doctor of Business Administration.
The new name comes in response to continued market changes that have stemmed from the growing significance of the EDBAC (Executive Doctorate of Business Administration Council), and also addresses the input from many students to have that more widely recognized degree name.
“From conception, this program has focused on research rigor to prepare executives to create social, intellectual and economic value for their organizations and society at large,” said Kalle Lyytinen, faculty director of the program and professor of design and innovation. “The name change was carried out to meet the market demand and recent shift- a market we created 25 years ago in North America. The change signals our commitment to provide a premier, world-class doctoral education through a research-focused, comprehensive program that stems from our unique and deep-rooted history in this space”
DM program faculty voted in favor of the name change in April 2019, which was then approved in November by the curriculum committee and the full-faculty assembly earlier this year.
Students already enrolled in the program will not be affected by the name change and will follow the curriculum plans and program steps outline at the time they started the DM program.
Upon graduation, students in the current DM program will be eligible to apply for a “Certificate of Equivalency” indicating that the Doctor of Management degree is equivalent to the Doctor of Business Administration degree from the Weatherhead School of Management. This will be the same option available to alumni of the DM program.
