Student Scholarships at Weatherhead

The Francis V. and Johanna Baldo Scholarship was established in 2006 following the death of Francis V. Baldo, PhD (MBA '60). Baldo entered into Charitable Gift Annuity agreements with Case Western Reserve with the following stipulation: Upon his death, the annuities' balance was to be used to provide general scholarship support for students enrolled in the Weatherhead School of Management. Baldo taught transportation management for more than 30 years at the University of Akron.

The Cashy Family Scholarship was established in 2004 by gifts from Harry Cashy (Macc '86) and Maria Misthos to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the Masters of Accountancy Program. Cashy is with Dynamic Surface Applications, LTD.

The William W. (deceased) and Anna Jean Cushwa Scholarship was established in 1999 by William W. (MBA '75) and Anna Jean Cushwa to support students enrolled in the Weatherhead School of Management financially. Mr. Cushwa retired as the Vice President of Planning for Commercial Intertech and served on the Weatherhead Alumni Association Board of Directors for many years before his passing in 2020. 

The Maybell S. Donnell Scholarship was established in 1984 through a bequest from Maybell Sebek Donnell (BA '41, MBA '44). Gifts from her son Edward Donnell and the Edward and Rose Donnell Foundation provide scholarship support for students enrolled in the Weatherhead School of Management.

The Robert C. Douglas II Scholarship was established in 1999 by Robert C. Douglas, II (MBA '72) to support a scholarship for students enrolled in the full-time MBA program. Douglas is an Executive Vice President with Mid-Continent Capital, LLC in Chicago.

The Elizabeth C. Duke Scholarship was established in 2005 through the generosity of the late Elizabeth C. Duke to provide scholarships for undergraduate students. Duke was proud to hold the distinction as the first female Master of Business Administration graduate of the school.

The Fred H. & John M. Emery Scholarship was established in 2001 through a gift from John M. (BBA '42) and Barbara J. Emery. The scholarship honors John and his father, Fred H. (ADL '09). The fund supports an undergraduate student enrolled in the Weatherhead School of Management earning a degree in accounting or management. Emery is the retired Chief Financial Officer of Columbus Southern Electric.

The Fowler Center Fellowships Endowment Fund was established in 2014 through the gift of Chuck D. and Char A. Fowler. The endowment supports students in the full-time MBA program with a passion for sustainable value and who demonstrate exceptional ability, allowing them to focus on transformational ideas and business practices. Fowler is the Director and Chair of the Executive Committee for Fairmount Santrol. He is also chairman of the Case Western Reserve Board of Trustees.

The Harold R. Gardiner Scholarship was established in 1990 from the distribution of a trust of the late Harold R. Gardiner. The fund provides a merit scholarship for students studying economics. Preference for the scholarship is given to an upperclassman who has an interest in the area of finance.

The Larry E. Goldrick, Sr. Scholarship Fund was established in 2014 through a gift from Larry E. Goldrick, Sr. to support students enrolled at Weatherhead School. Special preference is given to graduate students from Ohio with a concentration in operations or supply chain management. 

The Phyllis and George D. Gotschall Scholarship was established in 2003 following the maturity of a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust Agreement funded in 1990 by Phyllis (BA '44) and George Gotschall. The fund supports a fellowship for a student in the Department of Economics studying international economic issues. Mrs. Gotschall Wilhelm is currently a director of the P.S. Gotschall Charitable Trust.

The Sherman Kempter Grinnell Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Sherman Kempter Grinnell. The fund provides scholarship support for deserving full-time Ph.D. candidates enrolled in the Weatherhead School of Management in their final year and working on their dissertation in the Department of Organizational Behavior.

The Allen C. Holmes Fellowship was established in 1992 with a gift from Jones, Day Reavis & Pogue in memory of Allen C. Holmes. This award provides an annual opportunity for a talented, second-year Master of Business Administration student studying to become involved in regional economic policy issues at the highest level within the Cleveland community.

The James Lanigan Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 in memory of James Lanigan with gifts from family and friends. The scholarship supports undergraduate students with financial needs pursuing a degree in business management with a preference given to students from a single-parent family, to the extent permitted by law.

The KPMG-Louis E. Levy Scholarship was established in 1993 with gifts from Louis E. Levy (BA '56), his colleagues, and KPMG Peat Marwick. The scholarship supports undergraduate students in good standing achieving senior standing or has received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Case Western Reserve University. Ideal candidates have also officially declared an accountancy major and received admission to the Integrated Study Program in Accountancy. 

The student will also have completed at least 50% of the accounting courses required for an undergraduate degree in accounting. Levy is the retired partner, vice chairman and director of KPMG Peat Marwick.

The Hugh and Eleanor Luke Management Scholarship was established in 1979 by the Lukes to provide scholarship support for students enrolled in the MBA program. Mr. Luke was a member of the Board of Trustees of Case Western Reserve University.

The Richard and Elizabeth Scholarship was established in 2006 through a gift from T. Richard (MBA '58) and Elizabeth Martin. The scholarship supports students in the Weatherhead School of Management. Martin is the retired first vice president of UBS Paine Webber.

The Mario M. Morino Scholarship was established in 1993 by Mario Morino (BBA '67), James Rutherford and General Atlantic Services Corporation. The scholarship supports a student enrolled in the Weatherhead School of Management who is in need of financial assistance, has an outstanding undergraduate record, and desires to pursue studies in the application and prevention of abuse of advanced information technologies, with a preference for students who are United States citizens and residents of Ohio. Both Morino and Rutherford are Emeriti Trustees of Case Western Reserve University.

The Mitchell V. Morse Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 by alumni of the Weatherhead School and friends and family of Mitchell V. Morse to honor his memory. The scholarship benefits one or more deserving full-time Executive Doctorate of Management candidates. Morse was a student in the EDM program at the time of his death.

The PNC Foundation Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 by the PNC Foundation to establish scholarship support for minority graduate students, preferably from Northeast Ohio, enrolled in Weatherhead.

The Scherzer Family Scholarship was established in 1991 through a gift from Larry S. (MBA '67) and Carole Scherzer to create a scholarship for students in the Weatherhead School of Management. Scherzer is the founder and president of Scherzer International.

The Kevin J. Semelsberger Prize for Excellence in Management was established in 1994 through the generosity of The Semelsberger Foundation, The Schey Foundation and The Scott and Fetzer Foundation in memory of Kevin Semelsberger (BS '90). The prize recognizes a junior with a major in management, enough credits to enter senior year, and a high-grade point average. The candidate is also a permanent resident of the United States and has been of most service to the University.

The William K. Smith Scholarship was established in 2008 through a gift of property from William K. Smith to provide financial assistance to students concentrating in information systems or accountancy.

The Tracy L. Tomko Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 through gifts of family and friends of the late Tracy L. Tomko (MBA '00). The scholarship is designed for a female student enrolled in the Accelerated MBA program.

The Norman E. Wallace Legacy Scholarship was established in 2004 through gifts received in his memory to create a legacy to fund two minority students with a book scholarship. Norman was an MBA candidate at the time of his death.

The Wallach-Lee Families Scholarship was established in 1988 through the generosity of the late Edward I. Wallach, Dorothy Lee Wallach and members of their families. The scholarship aims to provide financial aid to a student with average grades and a major in accounting at the Weatherhead School of Management. Wallach was a lecturer of Business Law at Western Reserve College, and his wife was a student at Flora Stone Mather College.

The John S. Watterson Scholarship was established in 1962 by Watterson Jr. (BBA '26) to provide financial aid for one or more deserving full-time students in the MBA program. The qualified student(s) also take courses leading to careers in investment or brokerage or the profession of security analyst. Watterson was the managing director of the Cleveland Paine Webber office.

The Donald M. Wolfe Scholarship was established in 2001 through the generosity of alumni of the Weatherhead School of Management and friends of Donald M. Wolfe to honor his memory. The scholarship supports one or more deserving full-time PhD candidates in the Weatherhead School of Management in their final year and working on their dissertations in the Department of Organizational Behavior. Dr. Wolfe was a professor in the Department of Organizational Behavior for 38 years, chairing the Department for five years.
