Research workstations at the Freedman Center

The Freedman Center lab features multiple workstations available to CWRU students, staff, and faculty. These workstations have dedicated functions ranging from scanning and A/V editing to high-powered research software.

Research workstations have research software for those who need to learn or utilize tools for working with GIS, network analysis, R, data visualization, statistics, and many more. The hardware is the most robust we have in the Center and configured for crunching data quickly and efficiently.

Software

A full list of available software is viewable at researchguides.case.edu/FCsoftware. Some of the software installed on these machines include:

  1. SPSS
  2. ArcGIS
  3. NVivo
  4. R and RStudio
  5. Tableau

Hardware

Research workstations have the following hardware:

  1. Intel Xeon E3-1270 v6 @ 3.80GHz processors
  2. Dual Nvidia Quadro P1000 GPU 4GB graphics cards
  3. 512GB solid state hard drives
  4. 1TB 7200RPM of storage
  5. 64GB of RAM

The lab's multimedia and digitization capabilities include an A/V capture room and computer workstations in the lab. You can digitize from almost any consumer format from the past 100 years here using one of these stations or an A/V station. A/V editing workstations allow users to digitize, edit, study, and export A/V materials.

Software

A full list of available software is viewable at researchguides.case.edu/FCsoftware. Software on the A/V workstations includes:

  1. Adobe Creative Cloud suite
  2. Photogrammetry software (Zephyr and MetaShape)
  3. Autodesk suite
  4. Comic Life
  5. Other AR/VR software

In addition, these machines come equipped with software to help you create and edit 3D models.

Hardware

A/V workstations have the following hardware:

  2. Dual Nvidia Quadro P1000 GPU 4GB graphics cards
  3. 512GB solid state hard drives
  4. 1TB 7200RPM of storage
  5. 64GB of RAM

Scanning equipment includes:

  1. ScanPro 3500 USB
  2. Plustek OpticFilm 8200i, OpticBook A300, and PS 286
  3. Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle USB
  4. Epson 10000 XL, 11000 XL, and FastFoto
  5. USB Audio Capture Device
  6. Kic scanners

See digitization formats elsewhere on this page.

A/V capture is a real-time process, so if a video is 1 hour long, it will take 1 hour to “play” into the computer. The following can be digitized in the self-serve lab:

  • Audio Cassettes
  • Micro Cassettes
  • MiniDisks
  • Records (33, 45, & 78)
  • VHS Tapes (NTSC, PAL, & SECAM)
  • Betmax (Regular and Super)
  • 8mm Video (Regular, High 8, Digital 8)
  • Super VHS
  • VHS-C
  • Laserdisk
  • DVD (NTSC & PAL - any region)
  • Blue-ray
  • MiniDV & FullSizeDV (NTSC & PAL)
  • HD MiniDV
  • uMatic
  • Slides and negatives: medium format, 35mm, strip film, APS cartridges, and large format transparencies
