Dear (use the name of the recruiter or company contact, if you have it. If not, address "the hiring committee"),

First paragraph: Indicate the reason for writing, the specific position or type of work for which you are applying and how you learned of the opening. Mention why you are interested in the position, the organization, its products and services. You may wish to include the name of the contact who referred you to the company/opportunity.

Second paragraph: Promote yourself! Refer the reader to your attached resume that summarizes your qualifications, training and experience. Explain how your academic background, specific achievements and unique qualifications make you a qualified candidate for that specific position. Indicate what you can do for the employer.

Third paragraph: Express your desire for a personal interview. You may want to indicate alternative dates or simply advise the employer of your flexibility as to the time and place. Close the letter with a statement that will encourage a response. For example, state that you will be in the city where the organization is located on a certain date and would like to arrange an interview. You should always indicate when and how you will follow the letter with a phone call.
