Position Objective

The Associate Dean for Graduate Academic Affairs provides institutional faculty leadership for graduate academic policy, standards, and degree progression across all programs administered by the School of Graduate Studies. Serving as a principal academic advisor to the Vice Provost and Dean, the Associate Dean ensures consistency, rigor, and transparency in academic expectations while respecting disciplinary autonomy. 

As a faculty administrative leader, this role is central to advancing student success and timely degree completion. The Associate Dean operates as a peer leader within the faculty community by contributing academic judgment, credibility, and perspective, while partnering with professional staff who manage day-to-day academic operations. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Policy and Standards Leadership: Provide faculty leadership and advise the Vice Provost and Dean on graduate academic affairs, academic integrity, and graduate academic standards. Lead the development, revision, and implementation of school-wide policies. Serve as a faculty resource and escalation point for complex or precedent setting academic matters.
  • Degree Progression and Expectations: Lead faculty efforts related to degree progression frameworks, including milestones, candidacy expectations, and time-to-degree norms. Promote institutional consistency and clarity while recognizing disciplinary differences. 
  • Program Review and Accreditation: Advise on graduate program reviews and accreditation processes. Review program-level academic standards and degree requirements to support institutional quality while respecting program autonomy. 
  • Cross-School Faculty Liaison: Engage with associate deans, program directors, and faculty committees across schools to support graduate affairs. Foster cross-school dialogue on graduate education challenges, policy interpretation, and best practices in mentoring and advising. 
  • Shared Governance and Committee Leadership: Serve on or co-chair councils and committees related to graduate academic policies. Represent the School of Graduate Studies in faculty-facing governance contexts and promote best practices in graduate program oversight. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides academic direction and guidance to the Manager of Graduate Academic Affairs in partnership with the Vice Provost and Dean.

Position Requirements & Compensation

  • Eligibility: Hold a current appointment as a tenured professor at Case Western Reserve University. 
  • Effort: This is a part-time administrative leadership role requiring 50% effort. 
  • Stipend: An administrative stipend will be provided in addition to the base faculty salary.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across disciplines and to navigate complex academic and governance environments. 
  • A record of leadership in graduate education, including graduate mentoring, advising, or program leadership. 
  • Direct experience with graduate academic policies, degree requirements, and faculty governance. 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
