Why Study Math or Science at CWRU?

Research

Exceptional research opportunities empower CWRU students from the very start of their undergraduate journeys, often paving the way for remarkable achievements beyond campus. More than half of our math and science majors participate in multiple hands-on research and experiential learning projects—gaining real-world skills and making meaningful discoveries. Explore a few of their stories.

  • Astronomy major Nathanael Burns-Watson worked with faculty at University of Texas at Austin to analyze data from the NASA Kepler Space Telescope for his research on host stars in binary systems. His findings on exoplanet radius gaps led him to present at the American Astronomical Society meeting in New Orleans.
  • Anshul Nayak, a chemistry major working in the Mathur Nano Lab under the mentorship of Divita Mathur, PhD, used “DNA origami” to construct programmable, 3D nanoparticles that act as protective cages for delivering gene-editing tools directly into target cells. His presentation, “Synthesis of Gene-Editing DNA Origami Nanoparticles,” won first place in fall 2025 in the life sciences section of Intersections, CWRU’s undergraduate research symposium.
  • Blessing Masanga, a computer science major, worked with the Office of Energy and Sustainability and faculty from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering to develop a data-driven model for tracking carbon footprints across university departments. Her project, “Departmental footprint: Redefining sustainability in higher education settings,” was awarded second place in the poster competition at the 2026 Midwest Climate Collaborative Summit.

Events for Math and Science Students

Case Western Reserve University math and science students enjoy exciting traditions that make learning fun beyond the classroom. Favorites include the Pumpkin Drop, where students explore the science of gravity through a experiment inspired by Galileo Galilei and Humans vs. Zombies, a campus-wide game hosted by the Big Games Club that combines strategy, teamwork, and friendly competition while supporting a charitable cause.
