During the semester I am prepared to meet individually (by appointment) with any and all students enrolled in this course. That is especially true, however, during the first week of class and especially for students with disabilities who are registered with the Coordinator of Disability Services [368-5230] and who may need individual arrangements, especially for students with disabilities who are registered with the Coordinator of Disability Services [368-5230] and who may need individual arrangements.
Course Description:

This course has the following objectives: 1) View and comprehend 14 German movies; 2) discuss German language, history, and culture as well as filmmaking as they are reflected in the German movies featured in this course; and 3) learn how to write film reviews on German movies in German and English. The course will be mainly taught in German. It counts as SAGES Departmental Seminar Requirement.

Requirements:

Prerequisite: One 300 level course or equivalent.
Reading Assignments: You are expected to read the information about each movie posted on this course website before viewing the movies.
Weekly Reading Reflections: Before we view and discuss the film in class, in your weekly reading reflections, part of your written homework, you should discuss the background information of each film as well as your thoughts/reflections about the most impressive aspects of the film of the week.
Class Attendance: You are expected to attend class regularly and on time. Unexcused absences, late arrivals, and/or leaving class early will negatively affect your attendance grade. Excused late arrivals and/or leaving class early are reserved for medical, emergency, or religious reasons; as such, they can be made up by completing extra credit assignments. Unexcused absences will result in losing both attendance and class discussion scores for the missed classes. Three [3] unexcused late arrivals and/or leaving class early equal one [1] absence.
Class Activities: Classis discussion, which takes place after the viewing of each film is the oral portion of your class participation. The discussion uses a list of discussion questions about a film.
Presentations: In each of the two 3-5 minute oral presentations, you will present a film in German, about its content, production or reception, using around five PowerPoint slides. The purpose of the oral presentations is to develop your German oral communication skills.
Film Review Forms: In each of the four film review forms (select from the ones on the menu on the right=>), of which you can complete two in German and two in English, you will review a film according to a number of review categories.
Final Film Review Paper: The final paper, in which you will focus on reviewing one of the films viewed and discussed but not reviewed, should analyze a particular thematic or formal aspect you learned about during the semester.

Grading:

Your grade will both reflect your effort to improve your proficiency and skills and their actual improvement. It consists of the following:
Attendance: (.5%% x 28) 14%
Class activities: (1 x 28)
28%
14 weekly reading reflections in bullet points: 5 sentences/bullet points in German or 10 in English, due in Canvas (1% x 13)
