SEVEN HILLS, originally part of Independence Twp., incorporated as a village in 1927 and as a city in 1961.

SHAKER HEIGHTS is a Cleveland inner-ring suburb 8 miles southeast of downtown. Originally part of WARRENSVILLE TWP., it covers 6.5 sq.

SHAKER HEIGHTS LANDMARKS are those buildings, sites, and areas of exceptional architectural or historical significance in that city. There are two types of landmarks in SHAKER HTS., those listed on the National Register, and those listed on the local level. The local landmarks are the result of designations by the Shaker Hts.

SIFLEET, WILLIAM J. (1860-8 May 1932) is remembered as "the father of BROOK PARK" for his pivotal role in the formation of that Cleveland suburb. The son of Thomas and Elizabeth Sifleet, he was born on their farm on Smith Rd., in what was then Middleburg Twp. Sifleet inherited and worked the family farm, marrying his wife Alice c. 1887.

SOLON, incorporated as a village in 1917 and as a city on 5 Dec. 1960, operating under the mayor-council form of government. It is 18 miles from Cleveland in the southeast corner of Cuyahoga County and occupies 21 sq. mi.

SOUTH EUCLID, originally a part of EUCLID TWP., was incorporated as a village in 1917 and as a city in June 1941. It occupies 4.7 sq.

SPRINGVALE GOLF COURSE AND BALLROOM are public facilities located on Canterbury Rd.

STRONGSVILLE is a Cleveland suburb in the southwestern corner of Cuyahoga County.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS was originally part of the farming community of WARRENSVILLE TOWNSHIP, established in 1816.

VALLEY VIEW, originally part of Independence Twp., is a small village formed in 1919, located 7 mi. south of downtown Cleveland along the OHIO & ERIE CANAL in the Cuyahoga River Valley. It is 7 mi. long and 1.5 mi. wide and is bounded by GARFIELD HTS.

VAN AKEN, WILLIAM J. (29 Oct. 1884-28 Dec. 1950), prominent real-estate magnate and mayor of SHAKER HTS. (1915-30, 1931-50), was born in E. Cleveland Twp. to John and Mary Dier Van Aken. He graduated from CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL in 1903, and immediately became an office boy for Natl.

VAN AKEN, WILLIAM RUSSELL (1 Dec. 1912-28 Sept. 1993) was a lawyer and politician, president and trustee of the Ohio State Bar Foundation, co-founder of the National Conference of Bar Foundations, and author of books on Real Estate law and the history of the Ohio Bar.

WALTON HILLS, incorporated as a village in 1951, is 13 mi.

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, originally part of Warrensville Twp. (see HIGHLAND HILLS VILLAGE), incorporated as a separate village in 1927 and as a city in 1960. Southeast of Cleveland, it occupies 4.5 sq. mi.

WESTLAKE, originally part of Dover Twp. (org. 1810), incorporated as Dover Village in 1911, was named Westlake in 1940, and incorporated as a city in 1957. It is 12 mi.

WESTVIEW VILLAGE, southwest of Cleveland, was bounded by BEREA on the east, the Cuyahoga County Line on the south, OLMSTED TWP. on the west, and OLMSTED FALLS and Olmsted Twp. on the north. The village occupied 2.45 sq. mi.

WOODMERE, originally part of Orange Twp., incorporated as a village in 1944. It is located in eastern Cuyahoga County just east of the intersection of Chagrin Blvd. and I-271. Occupying less than 1 sq.

ZIMMERMAN, CHARLES X. (18 Jan. 1865-14 Nov. 1926) military commander, businessman, civic activist, and sportsman, was born in Cleveland, the son of Charles X. and Theresa Reis Zimmerman. After receiving his education in Cleveland public schools, he joined the Ohio National Guard 8 May 1884 and rose through the ranks to become a captain. He served in the Spanish American War 1898-99 and was promoted to Colonel.
