Research Information

Research Interests

Dr. Xiong (Bill) Yu is the Chair and Opal J. and Richard A Vanderhoof professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Case Western Reserve University.  He also holds courtesy professorship from the Department of Electrical, Computer and System Engineering and the Department of Computer and Data Sciences. Dr. Yu received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in 2003, B.S. (1997) and M.S. (2000) degrees in Civil/Hydraulic Engineering from Tsinghua University, China.  He has extensive interdisciplinary training by holding a M.S. degree (2002) from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Purdue University and a B.S. degree (1997) from the School of Computer Science, Tsinghua University. 

Research: Dr. Yu research interest includes broad areas of geotechnical engineering and infrastructure engineering with a broad interdisciplinary perspective.  His research converge at the interface of Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with interdisciplinary efforts aiming to improve the sustainability and smartness of geosystems and infrastructure systems for the good of the public. He builds the foundational research and innovations in efficient infrastructure design, sustainability, resilience.  His research integrates innovative sensors, smart materials, AI/ML, advanced computational modeling, and system perspective to address the challenges in geosystem, infrastructure, and energy. 

In the infrastructure domain, his research focuses on advancing the intelligent infrastructure system with novel strategies by integrating sensors, smart multifunctional materials, machine learning (ML) and AI for smart environment adaptive infrastructure.   In the geotechnical engineering domain, his research focuses on understanding the multiscale multiphysics processes in the geosystems to support sustainable development and climate resilience.  In the energy domain, he has conducted pioneering research in energy geotechnology in understanding the Multiphysics thermo-hydro-mechanical processes, shallow depth geothermal energy, thermoelectricity energy harvesting, wind energy design system design and utilization, etc.  He has published extensively in these areas. He is a member of the organizing committee for the ASCE inaugural Shale Energy Conference at Pittsburgh, PA by the ASCE Energy Division in 2014 and served as an editor of the conference proceeding.  He was a co-Chair of the Great Lakes SedHeat Geothermal Energy Workshop in 2017, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  He organized the NSF sponsored CAREER development workshop for junior geotechnical faculty. 

He is PI of over 60 competitive research projects, including 16 projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation (14 as PI, 2 as co-PI).  He is also PI for a number of projects sponsored by the National Research Council, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and private industry.  Research support totals over $20M with his share of over $10M.  Dr. Yu is a recipient of NSF CAREER award in 2009.  He has published around over 200 journal articles, 50 special publication papers, and 140 referred conference papers).  He has co-edited 6 Geotechnical Special Publications.  He holds a few U.S. patents and invention disclosures.

Education: Dr. Yu empowers strong student success.  He has graduated 20 Ph.D.s.  Eleven (14) students received tenure track faculty positions, including 8 at the U.S. Universities and 6 at oversea Universities. Six (6) students works at world renown companies. Two (2) students have received the NSF CAREER award. Additionally, five (5) students received young investigator awards so far. He currently advises the dissertation work of 9 Ph.D. students.  He has also advised the research of over 50 undergraduate students. Many of them have published papers in referred conferences and journals. A few students have also won recognitions by various research awards and student paper competitions. He has been nominated a number of times for excellence in graduate mentor and graduate teaching awards.

He has worked with the University office to develop a number of international educational programs including 2+2 binary program and 3+2 BS/MS program. 

Dr. Yu has actively participated international collaborations to advance research and education.  He has delivered over 100 invited talks. He was a member of U.S. research community to participate international research exchanges, including keynote speech at the US-China Workshop on Sustainable Materials in 2008, the US-Japan Workshop on Bio-inspired Engineering for Next-Generation Sensors and Actuators in 2011, NSF workshop on the Material Genome for Infrastructure Materials in 2017.  He was selected to participate in the U.S.-Germany Frontiers of Engineering symposium in 2013 and the 2013 World Frontier of Engineering symposium. 

Service and Leadership:  Dr. Yu serves on committees of ASCE, IEEE, TRB, SPIE, etc. He was the chair of the Geo-Institute Engineering Geology and Site Characterization committee, which was selected to receive the Geo-Institute Technical Committee of the Year award for the excellent leadership efforts. He is also a member of the expert task group for the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) projects. He serves on the editorial board of journals such as Scientific Reports, AI in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Testing Journal, Journal of Testing and Evaluation, and Journal of Advances in Civil Engineering Materials and served as an associate editor of the Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering (2010-2013).  He also served as the guest editor for journals such as Acta Geotechnica, Journal of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, International Journal of Pavement Research and Technology, Journal of Zhejiang University. He provides review service for a number of journals, conferences, and funding agencies. 

Dr. Yu provided a number of leadership roles at the Department, Engineering and University level service.  He serves as the Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (since 2019).  Under his leadership, the Department significantly increased its research portfolio, including doubled its graduate student population and significantly improved the productivity of its scholarly work (currently ranked No. 8 among Civil Engineering programs in the Nation according to academic analytics in 2025). Dr. Yu served (by elections) as the Chair of Case School of Engineering Executive Committee (2017-2019), chair of Case School of Engineering Promotion and Tenure Committee (2016-2017), and chair of Case School of Engineering Undergraduate Committee (2014-2016).  He was the Case School of Engineering representative on the University Faculty Senate Committee on Undergraduate Education (2015-2017), University Faculty Senate Nomination Committee (2014-2016). He was a member of the Case School of Engineering Strategic Plan Performance Committee and co-lead the Research Thrust (2012-2014).
