Longhua Zhao is an associate professor in the department of mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics at Case Western Reserve University. She received her PhD in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010.
Her research is centered on applied mathematics, with particular emphasis on fluid-structure interactions and active matter, motivated by problems arising in biology, biophysics, and biomedical engineering. Specific applications include cilia, helical flagella, micro-fluidic tweezers, spider dragline systems, and active filaments. Her research combines mathematical modeling, analytical techniques, numerical simulations, and machine learning, together with experimental validation.
Academic life fascinates her through both the pursuit of knowledge in research and the opportunity to share knowledge through teaching and mentoring. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and advises students in research, independent studies, and graduate projects.
