Mission and Overview
The mission of the PhD in Nutrition Program is to increase the number of scientists, academicians, and researchers who can formulate questions and solve problems in relation to the treatment and prevention of the metabolic, gastrointestinal, and other diet-related diseases of our society. The increasing problems and inequities associated with these diseases of our State, Region and the U.S. require these appropriately trained individuals.
Students in our PhD program work closely with a research advisor and mentor with an active federally-funded research program for their focused research area. Coursework will be tailored to the student’s research focus and career aspirations, but all students will gain a broad perspective and foundation in nutritional science spanning biochemistry and metabolism to health promotion and disease prevention.
Areas of Concentration
Multiple areas of concentration are possible in our PhD in Nutrition, including applied nutrition and nutritional biochemistry/metabolism. The nutritional biochemistry/metabolism track offers extensive in-depth coursework in stable isotopes and metabolomics with a focused metabolic research project. The applied nutrition track offers extensive coursework in clinical and population health, intervention design and research methods, as well as core training in nutritional science. Dissertation research topics can be clinical, community/public health, or policy oriented in the applied nutrition track. There are opportunities for elective coursework in both tracks. The electives are tailored to address the strengths/weaknesses and research/career interests of each student.
Admission and Information Sessions
Those interested in applying for Fall 2025 admission should contact Dr. Melissa Prescott (melissa.prescott@case.edu) directly if they are pursuing the applied nutrition track and those interested in nutritional biochemistry/metabolism should contact nutrition@case.edu.
An information session for the applied nutrition concentration of the CWRU PhD in Nutrition will be held on Tuesday December 3rd 7:00pm-8:00pm. Register to attend.
