Modes Defined

The modes of instruction are as follows:

In Person, Traditional (P) - Courses in which instructional contact hours for each student are delivered in-person or courses in which directed study occurs as arranged (e.g., independent study, research courses, dissertation, etc.).

Added for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021:

  • Blended (Emergency) (E3)- Courses normally taught in person, but due to emergency, in-person instructional contact hours for each student are reduced and supplemented with remote (synchronous and/or asynchronous) instruction.
  • Remote-Asynchronous (Emergency) (E2) - Courses normally taught in person, but due to emergency, instructional contact hours for each student are delivered in 100% asynchoronous remote format. There will be no specific meeting days and times; students view recorded material on their own schedule.
  • Remote-Synchronous (Emergency) (E1) - Courses normally taught in person, but due to emergency, instructional contact hours for each student are delivered in 100% remote format, with the majority delivered synchronously. Students are expected to attend synchronous meetings at designated days and times.

Continuing codes from prior to Fall 2020.  Note that these codes are in use for courses in which some or all material is normally delivered online  They are not used for courses with instructional delivery modes that are temporarily altered due to the pandemic:

  • Distance, Total (DT) - Courses in which 100% of instructional contact hours for each student are delivered through remote (synchronous and/or asynchronous) instruction.
  • Distance, Extensive (DE) - Courses in which 75 to 99% of instructional contact hours for each student are delivered through remote (synchronous and/or asynchronous) instruction.
  • Hybrid Delivery (HY) - Courses in which less than 75% of instructional contact hours for each student are delivered through a combination of remote (synchronous and/or asynchronous) and in-person instruction.

Summer 2020 only:

  • Distance, Total-Emergency (DM) - Courses in which 100% of contact hours are delivered synchronously or asynchronously via electronic communication or equivalent mechanisms, with faculty physically separated from students due to emergency.
