Ohio Department of Education Approves Social and Emotional Learning Standards

As part of Ohio’s Strategic Plan for Education, Each Child, Our Future,  stakeholders including educators, counselors, and other educational personnel developed a draft of “Ohio’s Kindergarten through Grade 12 Social and Emotional Learning Standards”. “Research demonstrates that students who receive support for social and emotional learning in schools do better academically, socially and behaviorally. Social and emotional learning has been shown to positively impact economic mobility and mental health outcomes.” The standards are for all students and focus on five areas: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making. Policy Director, Gabriella Celeste, played an active role in the advisory committee for creating these standards.

At the June 10-11 Ohio Department of Education Board meeting, the standards were approved.
