Studying abroad is more affordable than you might think! A wide range of scholarships are available for study abroad students, based on financial need, academic interests, and program location. The Office of Education Abroad strongly encourages students to apply for any scholarships for which they are eligible and is available to assist with the application process. CWRU & Education Abroad Funding Sources

These scholarships may be used for a wide range of education abroad experiences, including semester and summer study abroad, summer internships, research abroad, and faculty-led programs. Please note that these awards are competitive and offer partial funding.

Students who complete the general CWRU Study Abroad Scholarship Application will be considered for all scholarships administered by the Office of Education Abroad for which they are eligible. Learn more and apply.

Many CWRU departments and schools provide additional scholarship funding to support faculty-led study abroad and other international endeavors. Reach out to your faculty representative and/or faculty leader for more information.

Under-resourced undergraduate students have the opportunity to apply for the Dream Fund, which provides awards for students participating in an education abroad program among other experiential opportunities. Learn more and apply.

The Kupcinet-Getz International Science School accepts a select number of outstanding undergraduate students each summer to participate in research projects in mathematics, physics, chemistry and the life sciences. This program offers fully-funded research, including stipend. Learn more and apply.

Projects for Peace awards undergraduate students (or teams) a $10,000 grant to design and run a grassroots summer project that addresses root causes of conflict and promotes peace. The program encourages creative, community-centered, and scalable solutions—wherever the project takes place, including internationally. To apply, students must enroll at a participating institution, submit a proposal narrative and budget, and show evidence of partnership with local organizations. Learn more and apply.

External Funding Sources

Many corporations, governments, and non-profit organizations offer need-based and merit-based scholarships for study abroad programs. Remember to visit each scholarship provider’s website for the most up-to-date deadlines and application information.

The AATG Study Abroad Scholarship offers up to $1,250 to help U.S. undergraduates study in a German-speaking country, supporting expenses like travel, housing, meals, and program fees. Students must be full-time undergraduates at an accredited U.S. institution, at least 18 years old, and enrolled in a qualifying study-abroad program. Learn more and apply.

The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to students for study abroad. Award amounts vary depending on the length of study and student need. Students studying a critical need language while abroad are eligible for an additional $3,000 of funding, and students who are conducting STEM-related coursework or internships as part of their overseas program can apply for a supplemental award of up to $1,000. Learn more and apply.

The Boren Award, offered through the National Security Education Program, gives U.S. students up to $25,000 to study less-commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, including Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. For STEM undergraduates, there’s also a special summer funding of up to $8,000. In exchange for this support, recipients commit to working for the U.S. federal government in a national security–related position for at least one year after graduation. Learn more and apply.

The Bridging Scholarship is a life-changing opportunity to study abroad in Japan in a credit-bearing semester or academic-year program. Each year approximately 70-100 academically outstanding, financially deserving U.S. undergraduate students are selected as Bridging Scholars. In addition to receiving a cash stipend, Bridging Scholars participate in cohort programming designed to assist students build a future as a global citizen with a lifelong connection to Japan. Bright!Tax, the leading online tax preparation service for American citizens in over 200 countries, is proud to support students who are US citizens worldwide. The Bright!Tax Global Scholar Initiative provides supplemental funds for American students who are already or will be studying abroad under the auspices of an accredited academic institution. The British Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) offers £600 scholarships to undergraduate students studying abroad in the United Kingdom at participating UK universities. Learn more and apply.

The CLS Program provides immersive summer programs for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to learn languages of strategic importance to the United States’ national security and economic prosperity. Participants receive the equivalent of one year of language study in eight weeks, through intensive language instruction and cultural activities that reinforce both language learning and intercultural competence. The Curb Free Foundation provides wheelchair users with travel grants to assist with additional travel-related costs. Learn more and apply.

DIWC will award $500 scholarships to eligible students who have been accepted to an in-person study abroad program. Learn more and apply.

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. Learn more and apply.

The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are three to four week programmes for US undergraduate students, who have no or very little travel experience outside North America. Participants can explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university. The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs. This includes round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance. Learn more and apply.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) helps U.S. undergraduate students with financial need who are underrepresented in study abroad, such as first-generation college students or community college students, by offering scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on program length. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship. GlobalScholarships.com’s $1,000 Study Abroad Scholarship is offered to any eligible student who will be or is currently studying abroad for a year or semester. This scholarship is offered to all postsecondary degree programs, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D, as well as professional programs like law and medicine. Learn more and apply.

The Go City Education Scholarship gives one lucky student $4,000 to help cover academic costs like books and living expenses, plus four Go City attraction passes so you can explore a city’s top sites. To apply, you must be enrolled at a university in the U.S., U.K., or Canada (or studying there on a visa), and submit a 280‑character entry explaining which attraction you’d most like to visit. Recipients receive $2,000 (or $3,000 to students who do not currently have a U.S. passport) to help finance their international travel that includes an educational or service component. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents with demonstrated financial need. Learn more and apply.

Phi Sigma Iota International Foreign Language Honor Society provides study abroad scholarships for inducted students. Learn more and apply.

Project Global Officer (Project GO) is a collaborative initiative that promotes critical language education, study abroad, and intercultural dialogue opportunities through language study scholarships for ROTC students. The program was designed to improve the language skills, regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills of future military officers through overseas language and cultural immersion. Pi Delta Phi is proud to offer several undergraduate scholarships for summer study abroad that recognize superior achievement in the study of the French language. The annual awards are designed to enable undergraduate regular members of an active chapter to continue their studies of the French language and the literatures and cultures of the French-speaking world. Award recipients are expected to take courses conducted in French and for credit. Learn more and apply.

The Tanaka and Green Academic Scholarship was established to support short-term academic study (one semester or one academic year) at colleges and universities in Japan. JASWDC intends to award scholarships of up to $4,000 (one semester) or $5,000 (one academic year) for the academic year. The scholarship may be used for any combination of tuition and other academic fees, room and board, travel and transportation (including internal Japan travel), and other approved expenses. The Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship, offers substantial financial support for U.S. or Japanese undergraduates and graduate students to spend a semester or year abroad in Japan or the U.S.. Recipients are selected based on demonstrated financial need, and preference is given to students who have limited international experience, come from single-parent households, or are the first in their family to attend college. The mission at Going is to help people travel and experience the world. Since 2017, Going has helped young travelers get out there and get going. Twice a year, two outstanding students will win $1,500 scholarships toward their upcoming study abroad program. Learn more and apply.

The Ohio Chapter of the British American Chamber of Commerce (BACC) established The Loxley Purse, which offers $2,500 scholarships to students attending an accredited university in Ohio. Learn more and apply.

The Passport Portal (TPP) Foundation will cover the full cost of obtaining a U.S. passport for eligible students. TPP will also provide educational resources and scholarship opportunities to support participants as they prepare for their study abroad experiences. Learn more and apply.

The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. At Tortuga Backpacks, the mission is to make travel easier, including for students. Learn more and apply.

Study abroad with a program in a Spanish-speaking country for during the summer or academic year. The applicant chooses the study abroad program, which must be approved by the college or university (for course transfer credit) of the applicant’s chapter of Sigma Delta Pi. Applicants must be members of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. Learn more and apply.

Amideast Education Abroad Programs in the Middle East & North Africa is committed to providing financial assistance to students enrolled in CWRU-approved programs. Awards will be made only to students who submit a completed scholarship application and a complete program application by the established deadlines. Learn more and apply.

Case Western Reserve University students attending Arcadia STEM Summer Research programs are eligible to apply for Arcadia Abroad's need-based scholarships. Learn more and apply.

DIS offers a variety of scholarships to help students study abroad, including need-based, merit, diversity, and sustainability-focused awards. Roughly 50% of applicants receive funding, with amounts varying by scholarship. CWRU students automatically receive a $600 award for a semester abroad and a $300 award for a summer program. Learn more and apply.

The EuroScholars Consortium awards a limited number of grants of €1500 per semester to help lower-income students and students with disabilities in line with the diversity policy of the European Consortium of EuroScholars. In order to be considered for a grant, students must have their full EuroScholars program application and EuroScholars Grant application submitted to WorldStrides by the application deadline. Students with disabilities may also apply for the IES Abroad Disability Grant, which assists in covering the additional costs associated with a disability while abroad. Learn more and apply.
