The Office of the Provost, through the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force, is pleased to announce the AI Teaching & Learning Innovation Grant Pilot Program, a funding initiative designed to empower CWRU faculty and staff to drive the strategic integration of AI in higher education teaching and learning—either in the classroom or in support of experiential learning and educational activities.
Awardees will receive a comprehensive suite of support, including:
- Direct financial support.
- A collaborative network of peer expertise.
Pilot Program Information
Applicants may request up to $2,500 to support an AI teaching and learning pilot.
Funding requests should be proportional to the scope and needs of the proposed project. A small-scale experiment may require only a few hundred dollars, while a more substantial course, program, or educational workflow pilot may request up to the full $2,500.
Applicants are encouraged to review and make use of existing CWRU AI resources when developing their proposal and to consider how those resources could complement grant funding or reduce the need to purchase additional tools or services.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until available funds are exhausted.
Allowable Expenses
Funding may support:
- AI software or platform access
- Cloud/API usage
- Dataset access
- Student support assistance
- Instructional design consultation
- Assessment/evaluation support
- Educational materials
- Other non-salary pilot-related costs
Non-Allowable Expenses
Funding may not support:
- Faculty salary replacement
- Long-term subscriptions beyond the pilot period
- Hardware purchases without justification
- General departmental operating costs
This program is open to all CWRU faculty and staff interested in experimenting with AI to develop AI-enabled education or support educational activities. All projects should include a clear plan for evaluating impact and lessons learned.
Projects may involve classroom teaching, experiential learning, student support, instructional design, assessment, educational administration, or other activities directly connected to the university's teaching and learning mission.

As part of the application, applicants will provide basic project and contact information and upload a Project Proposal of no more than two (2) pages. The attached proposal must briefly address all eight required sections:
- Project Idea: What do you want to test, develop, or explore?
- Educational Need or Opportunity: What teaching, learning, student experience, or educational challenge does the project address?
- Participants: Who will be involved or impacted?
- Pilot Approach: How will you implement or test the idea?
- Evaluation: What will you measure or observe to determine whether the pilot was effective?
- Timeline: When will the pilot take place?
- Budget: How much funding are you requesting and how will it be used?
- Broader Potential: Could the project's findings, resources, or approach be useful elsewhere at CWRU?
