Francesca Brittan, associate professor of music at Case Western Reserve University, has published a new book, The Attentive Ear: Sound, Cognition, and Subjectivity in the Long Nineteenth Century.
Bridging music studies and cognitive science, The Attentive Ear is the first book to explore the key role of music and sound in shaping theories of attention. Brittan examines how nineteenth-century ideas about listening helped define emerging understandings of cognition, perception, and subjectivity.
