The U.S. National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines (NSF Engines) program "catalyzes and fosters innovation ecosystems across the United States to:
-
Advance critical technologies like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, advanced wireless, and biotechnology;
-
Address pressing national and societal challenges;
-
Cultivate partnerships across industry, academia, government, nonprofits, civil society, and communities of practice;
-
Promote and stimulate economic growth and job creation; and
-
Spur regional innovation and talent."
Because the Biden administration and Congress "recognized the value of advancing transdisciplinary, collaborative, use-inspired and translation research and technology development in key technology focus areas," they authorized the NSF Engines program in the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (Section 10388).
Case Western Reserve University has been awarded a NSF Engines Development (Type-1) Award (Award Number 2302943), with funding of up to $1M and two years to allow awardees to develop a Regional Engine.
