As we mark over 250 years of American history, it’s a fitting moment to refresh our civic memory. The principles and ideals found in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Lincoln’s great speeches, for example, have inspired generations— and continue to do so. Revisiting their historical context reminds us of their enduring meaning and purpose, helping us carry their legacy forward. Other documents that may be discussed are the Emancipation Proclamation, the Northwest Ordinance, the Louisiana Purchase, and Letter from Birmingham Jail.

This course is offered with the generous support of the Association for Continuing Education.
