As Jews came to the United States in vast numbers between 1820 and 1924, they arrived with little to their names. Being a “rag picker” was a launching pad to the middle class. Soon, Jewish peddlers expanded their niche to used clothing, and then ready-to-wear and couture clothing. The story of how these men and women rose to the top of the fashion world is a fascinating one. You will recognize names such as Ralph Lauren, Judith Leiber, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs, but there will certainly be some surprises along the way. Join us as we examine the history of Jewish designers who made the clothes and Jewish fashion photographers who made those garments famous.
