This course will focus on the later Middle Ages, exploring major developments in illuminated Hebrew manuscripts. We will examine representative Bibles, liturgical books, and prayer books produced in both Sephardic and Ashkenazi contexts. The class will explore the interplay between word and image, focusing on how visual representation was shaped by religious debate, social context, and reading practices.
