The end of the Cold War brought optimism that liberal democracy had triumphed as the model for humanity’s future. Yet, after 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis, this optimism faded. Populist leaders rose to power, promising “more democracy” while undermining liberal institutions that safeguard democratic foundations. As a result, global democracy has steadily declined. This year, Freedom House reported a fall in freedom scores for the 19th consecutive year. What went wrong, and what comes next? We will examine these questions through case studies of the United States, Hungary, and Israel.
